@Heretic Good question.
This quote caught me though:

I’ll start - first “real” road bike I ever owned was a 1984 Gitane Super Corsa. Something like $750 that I saved up for bussing tables after school every day. Renault Elf Gitane - Lemond, Hinault, Fignon. Got the hat and everything.
Man I miss that bike. All. The. Feels.
My best friend that I talked into racing with me then went out and bought a @#$% Peugeot. Some battles were fought. 😉

As I understand it, all UCI sponsored events have to be ridden with bicycles that are available to the public. That is why you see those racing cycles available to the public at ridiculous prices and long delivery times.

Believe you’re correct - falls under the “sporting purity” rules in the tech regs. That’s why many of the “super bikes” have earned bans over the years.

Surely those guys have had electronic gears for aeons. I’ve had them for 7 years and my bike, as nice and expensive as it was (😬), was by no means top of the range even back then.

I think you’re underselling by quite a bit. Most World Tour bikes I’ve looked at START around $10k and go up from there. Not counting specials, one-offs, and TT bikes.
I’d imagine something like $30k+ per rider, per team would be in the ballpark for bikes alone.
