That’s the test of the TRUE VALUE of any ride! Give it a day or two and then what do you say? If it wasn’t that special, maybe just had an extreme suffer factor but no real “joy in the journey,” you won’t already have that yearning to do it again.
The ones worth a return trip will have you dreaming with anticipation no matter how hard it felt during the event! That scenery can trump any pain along the way!

A rare-for-me-these-days MTB ride. Weather is cooling some, and my wife hiked with a friend to the cabin just below the ridgetop in our nearby state park (Douthat State Park.) They were greeted by 2 substantial rattlesnakes laying by the front door of the cabin. Also saw 2 more around the corner of the cabin just before they left and headed back down, and saw a black bear on the trail as they descended.
Douthat is where I rode more trails than anybody around for much of the last 30 years, tho’ my frequency has dropped WAY down the last several years, as I do only several MTB rides a year these days, staying on the roads for 95% of my miles. So I decided to get out the Trek Fuel EX 29 and get into the woods, and maybe get a chance to see the rattlesnakes and/or a bear or two.
No luck with those hopes, but it was great to ride trails again anyway. Long climb to the ridgetop, stopping by the cabin, then up and out to the end of the ridge and down several crazy switchbacks that I used to ride consistently, but a few are a bit too hairy for me to risk the crash penalty, so I had to hop off about 3 times to reverse or to get through some gnarly rocks. A great early taste of autumn in the air, and a reminder that the weather is going to be nice for some mountain bike rides again.

Family holiday to the French Alps over the last couple of weeks. A few bike park trips with the kids to Montgenevre, Puy-St-Vincent and Alpe d’Huez, plus hitting some enduro trails at the end of the day back to the campsite for me. Also got out for a few solo road rides. All over the Alps in the summer they close a climb to motor vehicles each Tuesday morning. Col du Granon was closed whilst I was staying in Briançon, so I joined dozens of other cyclists (and some mad runners) in a fantastic morning ride up the famous climb. Also climbed the Col d’Izoard and the 21 bends of l’Alpe d’Huez, and finally a family cruise into Bourg d’Oisins for Ice Cream on their excellent ‘Voie Vertes’ cycle paths.

Thanks. That’s from just below the top of the Izoard looking back at the end of the climb that comes up from the Briançon side. The whole climb is stunning, and was really quiet. Probably my favourite climb from those I have done in the Alps.
