All great suggestions that we have had to work through at some point in time. Only one thing I would suggest is to consider what type and/or thickness of your chamois. I have found that a thick padded chamois are not as comfortable as thinner ones for long rides. I prefer a thin nose saddle and a thick chamois tends to bunch up.
I haven’t read all the responses so far, but I found that a full motion platform helped a lot. Instead of my butt pushing against an immovable saddle, the saddle can move a bit left/righ and fore/aft. It’s only a few cm at most but it makes a big diff for me. I wouldn’t call it a game-changer, but it’s def a butt-changer.
Fizik vento Argo solved all problems for me, very pricey though but I use it on road bike in the summer, Specialized do a similar mirror range
Are you muscling in on my thread yes I was thinking the same when I saw that video:pray:
it’s all good
Thank you @Eddie_Evans it looks like there is so more to it than I realised, it’s really helpful to make sure I get what suits me before I buy, thank you
Thank you @Saddlesaur it’s good to hear you found this helped and will help in my decision making moving forward, I’m going collate it all and see where is the best place to begin, I have bib shorts so will start there and move up the to do list
Thank you @Phil9 again I really appreciate your help and will be putting it to good use, it really motivates me thank you
Lots of great advice here -
- Decent bib shorts
- Chamois creme
- Standing up etc
One thought that I don’t think has been mentioned. You say coccyx pain? - is it possible you have your saddle fractionally higher than you should? The overextension of the leg at the bottom of your pedal stroke causes a hip tilt which can then result in lower back pain.
So essentially it all comes back to bike fit but dropping by 5mm might make all the difference.
Saddle width is the killer for me - I have narrow sit bones so when I ride a rented / borrowed bike I’m in trouble on day 2 every time.
Best of luck finding the solution.
SQLab saddles are the only ones I’ll use these days. The ‘Active’ feature that lets the saddle flex left and right bit is great on the lower back, especially on a trainer, and the stepped design does a great job of relieving pressure in the wrong places. I have a 610 Ergolux on my gravel bike, and a 6OX Infinergy on my road bike that lives on the trainer over the winter. I’ve found that I prefer the models that have the highly stepped shape, rather than the ones that have more of an angle like the 611/612/614.
Another brand that takes an extreme but opposite approach to saddle shape is Selle SMP. I don’t like them much, but I know people who love them, so I always recommend that people try out both of those brands if possible, just to experience two different and unconventional takes on solving common saddle issues.
Thank you @SurreyAlps this weekend I am going to try this, I have been having trouble with saddle slipping down and actually the coccyx pain has increased since I secured the post so this sounds worth doing as well. I have contacted wahoo about the slipping seat post and they are sending me a ‘round’ post, thank you
Thank you @huliyska for your experience of these saddles, it’s good to hear and is something I am going to plan for, I’m finding all the advice I am getting so helpful as well as interesting and motivating,
Very good answer Sir @Glen.Coutts
I’ve done a bike fit with a dedicated professionnal, (not the LBS) and taken my bike as the template to replicate it to my Wahoo KICKR Bike. Same saddle (Italia SLR Boost superflow) but I’ve put the Gravel (more cushion) on the indoor KICKR. Still get bum pain. So I aplly the 1min out of the saddle every 10min or so, and I even take a little walk off the KICKR every hour or 30min for sessions longer than 90min.
This does not say not to fine tune, but indoor comfort is much more difficult to hone-in
Cheers.
Have you tried the GvA-approved Sufferfest saddle?
There’s no saddle pain whatsoever! Because you never want to sit down at all.
Sir Stands-a-lot’s saddle
Speaking of Mike Cotty, during my 26th time doing Getting Away With It the other day, I noticed there’s actually a few seconds during the last set when the screen tells me to stand, but Cotty’s sitting!
Thank you @GermBel for this, I’m going in!
Hilarious
How funny and well spotted@pkdaylu
