I might not have been clear, but I only referenced the 42t because that would be an option to try with my 50-34 compact. I wasn’t thinking it would be needed with the gravel cranksets (which I don’t think were EVER needed in the first place, IF they had utilized the already existing 11-40 or 11-42 and simply made a compatible road rear derailleur to handle it “acceptably” to their own specs. It ALREADY works on the 11-40 with my GS rear derailleur, so it wouldn’t take much more length on another RD to take up a little more chain-slack.)

I went to an 11-46 on my 1x gravel rig, with a 44T front ring. A triple set up could also be a good option for you…I’m 54 but feel your pain…
