Me and my husband are planning to start riding more regularly for exercise, commuting, and short trips around town, and after looking into different options, an electric bicycle seems like one of the best choices for convenience and everyday use.
Since we’re both complete beginners when it comes to e-bikes, we’ve been trying to figure out what actually makes the best electric bicycle for daily riding especially something comfortable, reliable, and easy to use long term.
We’ve done some research and shortlisted a few models that keep coming up, but now we’re a bit confused about which one would be the right fit for us:
• Fat tire e-bikes are more comfortable on rough roads
• Step-through frames are easier to get on and off
• Longer battery range is helpful for commuting and daily rides
• More powerful motors seem better for hills and heavier riders
Still, it’s hard to know what really matters when you actually start using one day-to-day.
We’d really appreciate advice from people who have experience:
• Which electric bicycle do you use?
• Is it beginner-friendly and comfortable for regular riding?
• Did you notice any issues after a few months?
• If you had to choose again, would you go with the same one?
We’re just trying to make a smart decision and avoid wasting money on the wrong option. Any honest feedback would really help us out
Before you buy, you should check both existing and proposed regulations on the use of E-bikes in your community and state. You should also examine where you want to ride, and how feasible your goals are.
That’s actually a really good point, and something we probably weren’t thinking enough about at first. We’ve mostly been focused on comfort, battery range, and beginner-friendly features, but checking local e-bike regulations and where we’ll realistically ride makes a lot of sense too.
Most of our riding would probably be around town, bike paths, and short commutes, so we definitely need something practical and legal for everyday use rather than just powerful on paper. Appreciate the advice
From the sounds of your planned riding, unless it is quite hilly, you might not actually gain much from an e-bike as the motor may not kick in much if your riding on the flat. You may therefore end up with an unnecessarily heavy bike. Save some money an by a non-bike or spend the same and get a really nice bike. You’ll be surprised how easy it will whip along. For general commuting use, cycle paths etc and if some of that is not tarmac, then an ‘all road’ bike might be a good option. I have a ribble CGR, use it on roads in winter, for the school run, a bit of gravel riding and touring as it can be fitted with panniers and mudguards. It’s essentially a road bike with slightly more comfortable geometry, wide tires and wider bars. It’s super comfy and great as a do it all bike.
This is what I have (mine is last years model). They do a flat bar version too, so if you don’t fancy dropped bars and/or your priority is comfort that could be ideal.
My partner has a Specialized Turbo Vado and it’s great. It’s very heavy though so as @sir_james.p says, if you don’t have lots of hills in your area it would be a bad idea. There are some pretty light e-bikes out there now though if you look around (and have a fair bit to spend…).
Another thing to think about is will you need to transport the bike(s) to get where you are riding? Although not an E-bike, I have one bike that is extremely heavy, a modified Mongoose Dolomite, that is very difficult to transport in anything other than a pick-up truck bed. Almost all my rides on it start from home.
OK at the risk of sounding like an ebike snob there’s something important about buying from a decent brand -
UL rated and not likely to set your house on fire
Actually a decent bike. Some of those feel like a Walmart bike with a battery.
I have an ebike from Priority, a Skyline. It’s a big powerful bike, and I honestly wouldn’t want anything more powerful, it’s already fast enough.
However for your uses, the Priority Current would be a better choice than the Skyline, and cheaper. One thing that Priority does is to use the Gates belt drive on all of their bikes, and it’s perfect for ebikes and city bikes.
