Kickr Accessories - Worth It?

Look for a lifeline desk on line possibly at Planet X … Wiggle etc. they are the same desk and cost about £70. There are a couple of types but mine is exactly the same as the Wahoo branded one. I use a Vacmaster fan (about £100)… 3 settings which doubt you will need unless in a very hot environment plus it is remote controlled from your handlebars so you only need to start it when you want instead of having to freeze from the start before you are warmed up. you can select the 3 settings from there too and turn it on and off.

Yeah, I will just say in response to all feedback (and thank you) - I’ve been back and forth w Wahoo Support multiple times and we just haven’t figured it out yet. My Headwind just doesn’t like the Polar for some MINORLY ANNOYING reason.

And yes - have been through all the steps. Have unpaired, “forgotten” and resynced all of my HW to no avail. Frankly have just been running it manually with my phone mounted on my bars of late, as I’ve not had a ton of time and it’s not overly high on my “give-a-@#$%” list…

I guess I should add that among various accessories, one of the most beneficial has been a full motion platform. I find it much more comfortable butt-wise and otherwise than riding a rigidly fixed bike. I have a Saris platform but there are many less expensive options that I believe would be as beneficial. Just a few cm of movement fore/aft and side to side can make a big dif. One relatively recent innovation is making a simple platform based on hedgehog balance pods. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079N75FG5/

Ooooh.

Bought a billy bookcase from ikea and put spare board on top. Its has shelves and is perfect height. Weighted with a kettle bell. Fan fits in shelving as well as towels etc.

Total cost. £15.

Here’s a pic of the lifeline desk

This set up looks good but doesn’t the desk restrict the air flow from fans?

I’ve wondered about getting some sort of desk, but after an hour or so on the trainer, I’m usually bathed in sweat.

It can depending on your setup. Typically, a fan is positioned low just ahead of the desk and angled upward with the desk ~1’ in front of the bars. The air flow passes under the desk unobstructed. I use two fans, one positioned like that and one off to the side, which I switch on when things get spicy.

The fan is angled and blows up under the desk

After starting this thread, reading through the responses and resolving to buy a Lifeline table, I found DC Rainmaker’s video comparing the Lifeline and Wahoo offerings. The way he sets things up, he finds that the Headwind fan does an excellent job of cooling his crotch when positioned as recommended relative to the desk. My setup/space has the flexibility for me to place my (non-Wahoo) fan off to one side, so I have an option if under the table doesn’t work (i.e. I consider a chilly crotch to be sub-optimal).

Yeah I find the Headwind’s airflow “shape” to be odd, unless it’s about 3-4ft in front of you with no obstructions. I have mine just off to the right/front, raised up on a box about 15" off the ground, a foot or so in front of my Climb, and i get the air right in the wheelhouse.

Yeah. I don’t have a Headwind but some fans I’ve tried, usually the squirrel cage type, generate a narrower blast so work better further away allowing it to spread out more for better coverage. There was one I was using ~2011 that was awesome but had to be ~8’ away to get decent coverage. Using something like that now I’d probably rig up some diffuser blades or something.

I use an old small table and a pile of jigsaw boxes. Works well. Personally given the instablity I have with the Software picking up all my devices I would NEVER add anything else in the room that operates on bluetooth ! ( I no longer let my husband in with his Garmin watch…! ) Can not imagine adding a fan with remote control. Gave up on the TV and dongle as well as the video kept timing out . So laptop on a pile of puzzles adjusted to neccesary height.

The desk and fan made great Christmas presents. I previously had a music stand to hold my laptop, a box fan and a small vornado fan with remote. We purchased a new house in May and the remote got lost. That was inconvenient, and I wanted a more elegant look for my new pain cave. It looks so much better, albeit a bit pricey.

But I’ve upgraded my setup over the past 10 years, starting with an Elite Qubo fluid, and buying better items as things have worn out.

I’ve had a kickr v1 (it never wore out, but I sold it to buy a Stac Zero) and am now on a kickr 18, with climb, fan and desk. I’m a firm believer in buying quality products because they last, making them cheaper over time than junk that has to be replaced too soon.

I’ve spent a lot of money along the way, and regret buying inferior items thinking I was being frugal. Frugality must also consider longevity, and with that metric I’ve saved money wherever I’ve purchased a higher quality item that hasn’t needed to be replaced since.

My first SYSTM stand… IKEA Antilop high chair - costs next to nothing second hand, wipe down surface, stable, seat doubles as loudspeaker shelf…

My current laptop stand is a barstool we bought from a second chance store. Works well but I can’t put it in front of the bicycle as it blocks airflow.

I just saw a post on FB where a rider cut out a table top of suitable size, attached a short post to the bottom center of it, and then clamped that post in his bike work stand. Brilliant.
