ToS stage 2: Nine Hammers - official thread

That was a heck of a ride. Alarming TSS/IF numbers make me think I’m gonna feel this one for a few days. Happy to say I friggin smashed it though

One day I would really like to see what is on the screen during the ninth hammer. I think there is music. But made it!

Sir @S_Joe I’ve been told it shows @David.McQuillen.KoS’s credit card details. I’ve only ever seen the first number, which is a 9. Other than that I’m afraid I can’t help you.

Oh yum. It’s my birthday today. Wanna send me a slice?

Not sure it was a great idea to do Joyride, then 2 hours of hilly mtb riding (1000m of climbing) then a 2hr Bush walk, then do Cobbler after getting the kids to bed.
All of this a week after KoS.
The blisters under my sit bones that were starting to heal came back! :hushed::sob::flushed:
Really not looking forward to the hammers today!

This was the first time I did Nine Hammers. I failed the last minute of the ninth interval. I think I got psyched out, I feel like I could have did it but I tried standing up and then my cadence fell and I just gave up. :sob:

I’m a little bummed but I’m glad I managed the other 57 minutes at 100%.

Don’t sweat it. Nine hammers is one of the hardest workouts around. That 8 9 double hammer is horrid and has destroyed many a rider!

That one got me today… that “recovery” at about half hammer intensity really hit me on the 9th hammer.

8.3333 (wait it is 8.666 isn’t it?) hammers out of 9 at 100% is no small feat! Well done!

At Hammer 1&2 I thought hey, maybe my legs aren’t as done as I thought they were! Then I blew up the last bit of 3 and resorted pitifully down to the recovery bit. No doubt that enabled to me actually enjoy hammer 4,and then that pushed me on to get through 5. But I couldn’t take the hat. 27 degrees Celsius again in my place today. I melted right down in the middle of hammer 6 and stumbled half deliriously to the window and heaved it open to let in the glorious - 30 air. Water pipes be damned, I’ve GvA to please.
Right back to the bike and polished off the rest of 6 And cruised thru 7.
And the last two of like to forget. I mostly hit targets on 8 and dragged my sorry arse thru the recovery at just 66Watts, and tried to talk myself thru mine just keep pedaling. But I blew up again. Legs are done! I sliced the end off that last hammer and created almost exact opposite mirror of the ramp up. Sorry GvA, turned that last one into a chiropractic mallet. Glad to be out of the valley.

Maybe not a good idea! But a great story for those “what did you do on the weekend” conversations :grinning:

Second time riding but the first time finishing 9 Hammers. The first time I rode it, I couldn’t quite make it through. Today, I suffered through to the end while hitting my targets. Now my legs aren’t talking to me.

You’re all having so much fun without me! I have a date with 9 Hammers in 14 hours. Been a long time since our last fling back in Nov during my knighthood. Of course a day of rest after Stage 1 means 100% effort. Oh the joys and pitfalls of Pacific Time.

I approached Nine hammers with a negative split in mind. I started at 70% and gradually worked up each interval. I hit the last interval at 77% and then ramped up through that interval so I was appropriately gasping for air by the end.

I never thought about it before, but I really enjoy the music to this one. There’s only one song that I’m not a fan of (but it’s still tolerable). Love Ming Ming and the Ching Chings at the end. And of course, there’s Coke Machine…
