ToS stage 2: Nine Hammers - official thread

I went into the usual spiral of ninegativity. I’ll make it through next time. Congrats to all!

About 8 or 9 hours until I Start stage 2 - legs still aren’t happy after Stage 1 yesterday, so I’m a bit worried! And this is my first go at NH, so definitely feeling apprehensive about today.

I’m still planning on starting on nuclear but I fear I may need to dial it down part-way through - I can imagine I’ll enter an ERG death spiral. If I do crash and burn midway through a hammer, do I simply pause the video and lower the % and see if I can turn the pedals again!?

Stage 2 done :white_check_mark:

For me 6 min warm - up is a joke talking about 9 hammers, so:

Igniter 80%: omg, even with 1 day off, my legs are totally toasted :see_no_evil:

Hammer 1: pffffffff

Hammer 2: this is a Nightmare

Hammer 3: survivor clever part of my brain: “listen, there are 5 more days ahead IN A ROW, dial those crazy numbers down”

Hammer 4: new “easy” numbers… I FEEL THE SAME PAIN

Hammer 5: aaaaaarrrrrrrgggghhhh

Hammer 6: why this one hurts? It supose to be an easy one!!!

Hammer 7: only two more, only two more,…

Hammer 8: Spartaaaaaaaaaaa!!!

The last minute of the 9th hammer.
Nothing else to add.

Now seriously,
did any of you made it while sitting and hitting the cadence and power targets???
It seems like GvA made it to make us all fail. Which is brilliant in my opinion :smiling_imp:

Nope. Didn’t make it past H2 never mind H9. And that was employing every sitting/standing/cadence trick I know.

Hammers swinging by from the right, from the left, from the front, behind, up, down… Aaaargh, there were hammers everywhere

Stage 2 done. My legs have well and truly been Hammered. Not just once, but NINE times. To make things worse i think sonebody has been putting extra stairs in my house. :joy:

Near disaster! Laptop battery gave out at the start of Hammer 8, meaning I had to recover and save the first 7 and then start the video again, fast-forwarding to the start of Hammer 8 and go again.

The extended recovery there did not help with Hammer 9

I checked the Challenge progress page - I got my credit.

Ouch … still just about managing to keep it nuclear at 100% 4DP and ERG mode … but that 9th hammer really hurt given the “fake” recovery after the 8th. Admittedly took advantage of the global time zone to get as much recovery as possible between stage one and stage two … no such luck for Fight Club. Well done everybody …

Oh dear Lord, the last hammer was almost a vomit hammer…

New respect for this!

That fake recovery is pretty sneaky

Stage 2 done here. The photo was between 8 and 9. The ninth was a toughie - top end of HR and puffing like a train…

The third hammer felt like the hardest thing I’d ever done on the bike up until that moment…
Then the fifth hammer felt like the hardest thing I’d ever done on the bike…
Then the ninth hammer was the hardest thing I’d ever done on the bike; I briefly cracked under the pressure under the ERG spiral of death, but switched to level mode and managed to get back to the target for the finish.

It’s amazing how relatively relaxing hammers 4 and 7 felt.

On a fueling note, maybe I shouldn’t have started this one in fasted state!

Smashed for the fist time!!!
After failing in doing it at 100% several times, managed the cadence in the 8th and 9th keeping it slightly lower than the target.
In the last 30” all out.

Ready for tomorrow, another hard stage,

MUCH respect to all you ‘Nuclears’ out there!

This was my first time visiting the valley. My plan had me slightly dialed back at about 90% for MAP and FTP. BUT, after some Bluetooth issues and restarting the app, I actually did 1-3 on 100% … and was obliterated! I had no idea how I would be able to finish! I eventually realized the mistake and dialed myself back and got through to the end with some righteous suffering.

So, cheers to the nuclears. I’m new … but am in awe and hope to be as worthy as you all someday :sunglasses:

Sounds like a ‘happy’ accident!
