After Covid - Training with an elevated heart rate

…or maybe you just needed a good cry!

I will say that I did a z2 today, as a recovery from HM, and it felt SO much better. Even if my HR was still (naggingly) 8-10pm higher than the same effort I did in November. Best I’ve felt on my bike in nearly two months.

Glad to hear you feel mostly recovered, @Rearviewmirror.

So (maybe) one more update from me: annual physical last week, labs, BP and EKG all :+1:t3:. The past couple of weeks on the bike have seen the HR generally return to normal, and my resting HR seems to have recovered as well.

The mid-plan, mid-January Half Monty reset really helped me get back on the bike and not crash out. Starting to feel somewhat normal again, glad to be back at it w/o the fatigue, pounding heart, etc. etc.

Slow and steady, folks!

@CPT_A so glad to hear you are recovering and making solid intelligent decisions! Great job listening to your body and to internal wisdom! It can be daunting get back to training but starting with what is manageable enables consistency and then momentum.

Keep up the good work.

Sounds like everything is going in the right direction @CPT_A :+1:t2:. Pleased to be able to report similar here. HR generally “normal” - though some activities still produce elevation (circa 5bpm up) but steady efforts are nicely in zone again. Resting HR also down. Just gradually working up the courage to test FTP but for now enjoying being able to cycle without my eyes burning a hole in the HR display! Definitely feeling the increased duration and intensity in my legs this week. Was out gravelling this morning which was a joy once in the forest but there’s a fair whack of climbing (900ft) in the first 5 miles which had me questioning the whole thing! Onwards and upwards towards spring though

Postlude here: into my end-of-indoor-season testing week, completed HM yesterday and got my MAP and FTP numbers back to where they were at the beginning of December, before my COVID/flu storm.

Interestingly, my cTHR jumped from 162 to 168, and I can confirm my max HR is higher than I thought - since I @#$% passed it on the 12th ramp. :grimacing:

Resting HR has recovered to pre-COVID.

A week of taper, FF to come on Sunday (), then outside for spring season.

Moral of the story: take COVID seriously. Don’t rush recovery. Listen to your body.

Sounds like everything is going really well @CPT_A :+1:t2:. I’d love to say I’m coming to the end of indoor training here but the weather is Scotland has been rubbish so it may continue for a while yet. I’ve not tested yet - there’s one pencilled in a week on Sunday. I do feel generally I’m back to where I was FTP wise but with a bit of loss on MAP. HR seems pretty much where I would expect it. I look back at December, January and am so glad it’s over! Majorca in 4 weeks’ time and I can’t wait  (middle of January I was thinking I’d have to cancel!) Feel very grateful really to be out the other side and all the wise words on here definitely helped get some perspective and gave much needed hope that it wouldn’t last forever.
