Firstly; I’m an inexperienced newbie here, so I’m sorry if I’m asking a question which seems in any way daft… I hope you may be able to offer some advice, please.
I ride a lot of audaxes, and am often surprised (and frustrated!) at how much time I spend ‘faffing about’. The difference between time elapsed and time ridden is often the difference between riding Audax efficiently, or not.
I’m on a mission to get to grips with this unhelpful behaviour, and I want certain fields of information to help me manage the situation better…
There are a number of metrics I need (or would like) to see on the Workout page of my Elemnt Roam.
Total Time (since I pressed Start) is straightforward and easy to incorporate.
Ride Time (the time I’ve spent pedalling and not auto-paused) is also easy to display.
Average Speed for the workout (which excludes time spent faffing) is also easy to show.
What I haven’t found a way to show is:
4. A field displaying the total ‘inactive’ time since the ride was started. (Yes, I know I can subtract Ride time from Total time, but in the midst of a 200/300/600km audax, mental arithmetic isn’t high on my list of fun things to do…) I’d like to see a ‘Time Paused’ field. This would, I’m sure, act as motivation to manage my stops more efficiently.
5. A field showing my Average Speed since I pressed Start, which includes Time Paused in that calculation. (Audax rides must be completed within a time limit, and it can be important to know the speed I’ve averaged across 20 hours or more - not just while I’ve actually been moving).
I’ve experimented by using Laps - but that doesn’t seem to help in either case. Is it possible to conjure up these two fields of data for my Workout screen? I can’t find them…
Thanks for being here to help.
Keep pedalling,
Jeff
Great, thanks for that - I should’ve spotted it
That’s one of two ticked off my wishlist!
I guess it’s a bit niche, and in most cases would prompt the question ‘But -why?’ - but I would’ve thought ‘Average Speed since I pressed Start’ wouldn’t be difficult to offer…
Meant to say welcome to the forums, Jeff @Northumbrian I’m always blown away by folks like you (we have a hearty group locally called the Manitoba Randonneurs who go on these endless rides. I’ve done long rides but they’re always done in a single go, no sleeping in ditches and such, lol!
As for average speed since pressing start, isn’t that just a total elapsed time/kms ridden?
It might be worth a message to The Company support team as they don’t actually have a forum outside of this one, which, for the most part is an extension of their SYSTM app (with the Equipment category used primarily for what people are connecting to SYSTM). The Equipment category has kinda become the de facto place in the forums where general wahoo equipment posts/questions/discussions like yours happen but it was never really designed that way from the onset (hence its complete lack of any organization )
Glen, thanks for your welcome! And for your kind comments. I assure you, I am no high-performing hardcore audaxes
In browsing the forum, I’d figured that this might not be the ‘best’ place for a question such as mine. But since there were some similar questions - and I could find no other forum more qualified to handle it! - I took a punt.
I appreciate your helpful replies.
There used to be a Google Group where stuff like was aired routinely, but having not looked at it (or for it) in a long time, it now seems to have been shut down thanks to sp*m and malware.
You ask: “As for average speed since pressing start, isn’t that just a total elapsed time/kms”
Well, I understand what you’re saying. But that would require some mental agility to calculate, over and over and over again. In the same way, Average Speed could be calculated (kms/ride time). But no-one needs to do that calculation, ever, because there’s a field which displays the answer to that sum, permanently in front of us! That’s what I was/am hoping for, for my conundrum.
Hehe, yep. I get the desire to see it at a glance, especially for the type of riding you do. It’s too bad you can’t just choose “include paused time” in the average speed display. Maybe your formal request will make its way over to the dev team
I think Sir @Glen.Coutts is right here - if you turn off auto pause and then don’t manually pause the ride when you stop I think it will do what you want - i.e. total distance/total elapsed time. Should be an easy thing to test though
I think that suggestion could work too, now that I think about it. Thanks for pitching in and encourging me to ‘take it seriously’ - I read it as a mischevious joke, that I might do these super-long rides without stopping for a rest!
It would be good to have both averages available as separate fields, in an ideal world. I’ve sent a request to the support team.
Thanks both.
