Apologies if this has been answered before in another thread, tried to search for it but couldn’t quite find the right thing.
I have a question on the ramp test part of the Half Monty - does it make a difference if you stop at the start of a ramp section vs the end of it? i.e say you stopped 2 secs into a level vs 58 secs, does this affect the results?
I recently completed a Half Monty during the first rest week of a 12 week plan. On the ramp level I stopped on, I stopped a couple of seconds into my final level (not the last level of the test overall) as I knew I couldn’t make the whole 60 secs, but could have made it to 30 secs or so. If I had continued until total failure, would there have been a difference? I’m guessing that if I stopped later then my LTHR may have been calculated higher, but MAP would be the same…? Does anyone know if this is correct or not?
I did a HM recently and I seem to remember the on-screen test suggesting that yes, it makes a difference, you should continue as far as you can along whatever step you’re on.
Honestly I wouldn’t personally lose any sleep over this if that happened.
It will have a minor impact on overall numbers + assuming you were giving it all you had likely reached your max HR at this stage anyway.
Another thing to consider is that people often feel after they stop that they could have gone « just a little bit longer » where in fact they were possibly 1 or 2 seconds from completely cracking.
Especially true when new to this sort of testing protocoles.
If I were you, I’d train on the numbers you get given and see how it goes.
Agreed that it will have an impact, but it’s fairly minor. The MAP value is calculated in part from your average power during the last five minutes you’re pedaling on the ramp, so if you could have continued for 30 more seconds, your last five minute average would be a bit higher
Thanks for the replies. I wasn’t worried about it! Just thought about it afterwards as my LTHR was 2 BPM lower than my last test at the end of Jan (though realise this could just be natural variance/getting fitter potentially) so if I’d went that extra 30 secs I think I had another 2-3 BPM in me, and my MAP might have come out 2-3 watts higher. I’ll see how the workouts feel this week - if too easy I can always up the intensity a percent or two, but I think the results are in the ballpark anyway. I have another Half Monty in 3 and a half weeks, I’ll aim to keep pedalling until I can’t anymore!
