I don’t have any personal smart trainer experience (I use an indoor bike with Bluetooth), but found this comment interesting by DC Rainmaker on his review of the new JetBlack Victory smart trainer, regarding competition with the existing Kickr line:
Will be curious to see how the existing players and market offerings will respond.
I’m biased, admittedly, but I would NEVER buy a trainer that was NOT compatible with the Kickr Climb. I’ve had one since late 2018 and I’d never give this up. Doing any kind of sim climbing (Zwift, FulGaz, SYSTM OL, Rouvy TPVirtual etc etc) without the front end engagement for me is a straight up NOPE.
Also, in Canada, the JB Victory (with Cog/Click) is pre-order selling for $800 CAD while the Kickr Core (with Cog/Click) is currently available for $859. To me this is hardly a slam dunk for JB. Imma have to give 2 SUF points to Wahoo for this one.
Edit: I will add that it is time for a refresh of features for the Core though, even without those updates (Race mode, wifi, direct connect, rebroadcast HR for AppleTV users) I’d still go with the Core for its compatibility with the Climb.
I’ve been using a Saris Hammer for 8 years; still a totally solid trainer and ERG machine, but loud. Saris is selling the much newer H3 which is basically same, but with a silent belt for $399. Thought about getting it but this JetBlack is a much newer design with more features. I have no interest in a Kickr Climb so that’s not a factor for me.
Until I got a Climb, beyond a passing curiosity, I had no interest in it either. Now, I wouldn’t be without it. I was interested in the Zwift Ride until I saw the front is just an immovable leg.
Edit: I think of the Kickr Climb as the indoor equivalent of the Garmin Varia Radar in that, I never knew I needed it until I got one.
OTOH, I also had and used the Climb in Systm and Zwift since it first came out. Sold it off w my kickr 5 when I got my v6 and Zwift Ride. Can’t say I miss it.
Har! I guess I’m just old-school low-tech. I put a block under the front wheel if I want the front end lifted, and use a mirror on my glasses out on the road.
That said, I always advocate for anything that can help make indoor riding less tedious, and if a Climb does that for you, it’s all good.
yep, precisely that. Indoor season is a solid 6+ months where I live. On my first trainer, a KK, I had nothing. On my next trainer a CycleOps(Saris) Magnus I bought a low tech 3 position trainer block, kept the block for my Kickr Snap, then when my BH approved a direct drive trainer, I got the Kickr and Climb together and have never looked back.
As for the mirror, whether mounted on your bike, glasses or helmet, the Varia knocks that up several notches giving you significantly more notice. Probably the best bit of bike tech I have ever bought and worth every penny. I’ve even had drivers approach me to tell me that they saw me from waaaaay down the road, and they also noticed the changed flash pattern as they got within 150 (ish) metres of me. Of course it won’t save my life if someone is texting or otherwise distracted when driving but it won’t hurt.
