Knighthood Quest 5.15.26

As a continuation of my latest return to Sufferlandria, I will be completing my first Knighthood Quest 3 days before my 55th birthday.
My history with Sufferlandria dates back to the beginning. Deploying in the military, I often was riding indoors as a form of fitness. I started w/ 3x5 cards generated from Friel’s Cyclist Training Bible. At some point I had a portable DVD player and nearly every Spinervals DVD made. Once Sufferfest came along I was hooked. I downloaded and burned them to DVD. My return is another part of the journey I’ll get to shorty.

My history with insane endurance events is another part of the story. Racing in Seattle, I got in to Randonneuring with 200 to 600 km events. Moving to San Diego, I raced the former Everest Challenge a couple times. I crewed in the 2007 RAAM and 2008 Furnace Creek 508. I love the challenge of performing under extreme mental fatigue.

Lastly, the physical part. Following a military training accident, my right leg and foot were put back together w/ a few screws and a realignment. Cycling was the only thing I could do without a ton of pain. Following my retirement, I pretty much shut down the physical fitness I had been required to maintain for nearly 30 yrs and the bikes (9) collected dust. Finally, I made the decision to buy a Kickr Bike, and beat my ass back in to shape. Today I am 55 lbs lighter and 20 lbs from my goal.

So with that, my Knighthood line up:
Prologue - No Place Like Home
Stage 1 - Hell Hath No Fury
Stage 2 - Angels
Stage 3 - Thin Air
Stage 4 - A Very Dark Place
Stage 5 - The Wretched
Stage 6 - Nine Hammers
Stage 7 - Team Scream
Stage 8 - Best Thing In The World
Stage 9 - The Omnium
Stage 10 - ISLAGIATT

The key stages:
The Prologue, returning to Sufferlandria has renewed the love of “Beating My Ass Today To Kick Yours Tomorrow.” The feeling of 97% max HR is like nothing else out there.

The Climbs, these renew my love of classic San Diego climbing, Kitchen Creek and Palomar Mountain, as well as my first teenage climbs of Mount Lemmon.

The Racing, I started as a junior with the Fair Wheel Cycling Team in 1985 and have always loved the thrill, even though they were only at the Cat 5, 4, and 3 level. Weekly races in Seattle at Pacific Raceways were one of my staples, loved those memories.

Stage 7, established based on all the wonderful advice of the Knights. Team Scream engages me like no other, I can be 30 minutes in without even knowing it. I find myself leaning in to every corner, I love the rider’s view footage.

And Finally, It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time. The name says it all, and has defined much of my life… a why not attitude.

Having completed the current Sufferfest library in its entirety since Jan 12, my next goal is completing the ProRace series in the lead up to the Knighthood. On the horizon is a POS, currently penciled in for Nov 18, the anniversary of my Bimalleolar Fracture of the right Fibula w/ internal fixation and spiral fracture of the right fibula Nov. 18, 2003.

So, here we go, see you May 15!

What journey you have had so far, and what a great set list. You’ll definitely suffer that day.

Wow! The lifetime of preparation and your recent return to Sufferlandria means you will crush this knighthood quest. Best wishes!

We’ve been waiting a looooong time for this one. Your place in the castle awaits. The people of Sufferlandria are quite literally beside themselves with excitement in anticipation
SUF Excitement

That has to be one of the most epic knighthood backstories I’ve ever seen. Your life has been leading up to this moment. You were born for this! GvA has been waiting to welcome you to the castle. This is your moment!

My guy the epicness is incredible.

Can’t wait to see you do it!

Good luck.

Broke the 200lb barrier this morning for the first time in roughly 17 years, a couple days ahead of schedule. I had established sub 200 or May 1 as the date I add more fuel to my bottles to get my gut in shape for the Quest. Rode Tour de Suisse Women 1 at 100% and those women cracked me on Lap 9 and BROKE me on lap 10. The bottle of HEED didn’t help me survive those punchy climbs. Cadence tells the entire story…

While it appears many of you like Yellow, Orange and Pink…clearly I’m a fan of Blue.

Lol I like the idea of sorting us into the four Suf houses like Harry Potter.

I’m house yellow.

+1 for fun times in the yellow funhouse. Not 30 days of Nine Hammers fun tho or 9 x Nine Hammers + Revolver KoS style either… ‘cuz THAT would just be cray cray, right Sir Sixpack? @emacdoug?

You mean 31.

Next year 31xRevolver, amiright? :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Oh wait, there’s no Tour next year.

Bummer.

Yes 31. 30 days in April plus the one day of 9x9+15(cough cough). Is your intention to do the KoS style 9H on May 1st?!?!?!

Not exactly. Separate shenanigans.

31x9=279 is the first shenanigan. Even tho April is 30 days I didn’t want to short-change GvA with only 30 instead of 31.

Then 9x9H+Revolver is a separate day.

R we not saying the same thing, differently? I’m saying 30 days where you did 9H (on some days more than one, and on some days additional Sufferfests). You’re saying you’re doing 31 9H in 30 days.

No matter how you smash it, that’s a SUF ton of hammers!!! And, it’s a solid 279 hammers more than I’ve done this year, not to mention the extra 81 hammers and 15 (cough cough) Revolver intervals that are also more than me.

Clearly, I’ve been overtaken by comfort. #TUHNTF #lessthanyou

Ah, I see. Yes we are. I didn’t catch the nuance of your 30 “days” of 9 Hammers. My eyes do that to me sometimes. Seriously, I sometimes see words that aren’t there. /helpless shrug

Anyway, I don’t want to detract from this topic any further with my misunderstandings.

As my Quest rapidly approaches, I am exploring my next goal. I am looking at a vEveresting in Aug/Sept. I am thinking Rouvy is the platform to use. I have zero experience w/ Zwift or Rouvy, but reading about the real world video of Rouvy, combined with one of my former regulars, Palomar Mountain, has me leaning that direction. I don’t see myself as a regular Rouvy user, and I am also looking to join the Knight Rides this fall, so I would need to switch to Zwift at some point.

Thoughts or suggestions?

As someone who has vEverested a few times I fully support your goal. The “rules” for vEveresting have changed a number of times over the past few years so it’d be worth reviewing them. Also, there’s a cool calculator that is SUPER helpful to plan your ascent in terms of time, power required, breaks etc etc. There are several Sufferlandrians who have both vEverested and irl Everested so if you’re looking for input and such, maybe set yourself up a new thread, or search through existing ones. Finally, this is ALWAYS worth a peek.

Oh wow, love your forward thinking in order to build off the knighthood quest.

I have never done an everesting (yet?,) but I have been on and off zwift for a few years, with the everest challenge on I think the whole time, and I still haven’t climbed everest miles and snagged that tron bike. Plus zwift has the ability of cheering on with a massive userbase.

My one thought is, boy if that was me, and I everested outside zwift, I would grumpy that I didn’t have that Tron bike after it all. :joy:

But hey this is your thing and you have to decide what way is your way. We all are driven by different things. My earlier years chasing video game badges bias me to zwift. Huge props no matter what you attempt!

FYI, Dame @Isa, the Tron bike isn’t awarded for a vEveresting. For that bike, you need to select the Climb Mt Everesting challenge in Zwift then after you’ve climbed 8848 metres you have to continue on for an additional 41,152 metres. Achievable but usually not in one go. At least not by mere mortals.

Virtual Everesting is a different beast. You can read all about it here. https://everesting.com/

Oh dear lord that’s how new to zwift I am. That’s another 4.650994575 vEverestings!!

Edit again: I’m not sure if I’ll ever zwift enough for the tron bike :joy:! Thank you for clarifying that Sir @Glen.Coutts I really appreciate it.
