Mileage not matching

I know this has been asked before and it’s really irrelevant but I don’t understand why the mileage between my Garmin computer and the mileage in the SYSTM app is sometimes spot on, +/- a few 10th/mile and sometimes it’s way off by “several miles” such as today. I use the same speed/cadence device “connections” as I always do yet, depending on the video, sometimes the distance is spot on and sometimes it’s way off, such as with the Italian Lakes: Lugano workout today. I’m sure it’s the algorithm with the SYSTM app causing the discrepancy.

Yes. Every app has its own algorithms for calculated speed and distance based on power and weight or whatever they choose to take into account. So it will rarely match between apps.

Any ideas as to why with some workouts within the SYSTM app the mileage is pretty much spot on between my Garmin cycling computer and the Windows SYSTM app while with other workouts it’s way off, such as today?

I think it depends on the power. I found that was well. While comparing speeds between SUF/SYSTM and the old Wahoo app and my old Garmin watch I found that certain gearing and certain power in different gears matched up better than others. So it would depend on the gears you used and the power you rode at at various points in each ride. A recovery ride or a z2 ride might match pretty closely while a tempo or vo2 ride might be differ more. And they might differ between riders, too. So it’s hard to be more specific.

Off topic but still on topic…

I have a Kickr Bike Shift using SYSTM. When I start a workout, there is the bike that connects as an accessory with gradient, power, cadence, speed. There is a separate accessory (presumably in the Bike Shift) for “virtual speed.” The speed in the bike app never matches the “virtual speed” accessory. Have never been sure what this is all about, but just ride without really caring about it. As per emacdoug, it seems every accessory has its own algorithm for bunches of stuff.

The virtual speed is the apps’ best algorithmic adjustment to give you properly calculated speed and distance. It’s much better than using the smart trainer calculation on its own.

Usually it turns itself on automatically when you first connect your trainer. If it’s off, turn it on and use it. It will give you to best most accurate stats.

emacdoug: Thank you for that succinct explanation.
