More of an observation than critique, but I thought it was comical that Team Scream is racing the TTT w/ Team BMC and the narrative is about who has to wash the bikes, but at the end the bike being washed is a Canyon…
Yep. Exactly. It’s the feeling and storyline that was important.
After riding The Omnium multiple times I could see and recognize repeated clips that were out of order based on the number of laps remaining.
That same thing can be seen in many sufferfest videos if you watch the mileage ticker in the upper left. That’s also why In some of the videos the footage is zoomed to eliminate them or are covered up to hide them.
And in the old Defender video the person wearing the red jersey switched between different riders, sometimes it was someone actually wearing the leader’s jersey and sometimes it was just a rider wearing a BMC jersey which is red but wasn’t the actual leader’s jersey.
It wasn’t the accuracy or real consistency that was important. Just used whatever clips were available to tell the story.
As long as there is a story in the video that is enough.
In the vast majority of situations, it is the music that motivates me the most. I do not race so that the instructions to bridge, overtake somebody, etc. are not as important. I do not generally care if “I win”, although in some situations seeing the finish line is motivating. The SUF humor is very important most of the time.
Not to me, personally. I’ve said as much before. That said, it does add a certain something, to be placed in to races with legends (even if, at least initially, I wasn’t really aware who they were).
I dread race footage. I don’t know or recognize the athletes. I can’t follow the strategies. To me, pros are unrecognizable and all the spandex butts look the same. The only thing that makes it work for me is the storyline explaining what I’m seeing.
I much prefer race footage; however, it doesn’t matter to me the level of the race. I much prefer the videos that have competition to the OL styled videos. I find myself leaning into corners on Team Scream, I can relate the motivation to bridge a gap, and time goes by much quicker. GOAT does not keep me engaged at the same level as Power Station.
To Sir Joe’s point (I think) licensing Pro race footage is probably much more costly than a continental race.
At first I didn’t recognize most of the riders in most of the footage. That didn’t bother me at all. I enjoyed it. It’s nice to have a mix. And for the most part, I don’t care if I know the riders or not. For the storylines, having racing footage matters. But I don’t need to know who they are or recognize them. Think how long it took to document who all the riders were in ISLAGIATT. It didn’t really matter if Billboard was actually multiple riders. But racing footage is a lot more interesting than just sticking you in drone footage behind a single rider zoning out on their own ride for an hour or two. So for the SUF workouts, racing footage helps make the experience. And it just depends on what the ride is. Cobbler worked because of what it was as a Paris-Roubaix race experience. But so may other SUF workouts were just whatever footage they could find and make a storyline with and it worked. If I’m just zoning out on a zone 2 ride then I don’t necessarily need racing footage for a good storyline. But for a harder workout it helps. But it doesn’t matter what race it is or if I recognize the riders. Just that the footage matches the efforts. Otherwise it breaks the immersive experience.
Take The Shovel for instance. Really hard workout. One of my favorites. Has random race footage from the Tour of Britain? I think? I don’t recognize 99% of all the riders. Interspersed with single-rider footage that I think is Mike Cotty, but could also be another rider in parts, for all the recovery sections. Has fantastic music. Great storyline that has nothing to do with racing or winning. It all flows. I love it. It’s the experience and the whole package that makes it.
Did ISLAGIATT this morning, and there’s a couple of nit-picks to unpick!
The sound effects of the eruption from Mt Sufferlandria are present before and after the sufferlandria climb segment, but there’s no footage of the mountain! Can that be added back please?
In the recovery intervals a bit of build up to the next climb would be good, there’s minutes of SUF silence at present!
During the penultimate climb, the music and text changes for the “remember when you were young” sequence, but the video is missing - please add it back - those few seconds were really great!
Thanks for keeping the Mulga Bill poem at the end, with the Abi Henderson cycling clip; but the Better Place music track is playing simultaneously with the poem which is a bit of a cacophony. I’m pretty sure the audio was previously just the poem; which is fantastic BTW and a favourite sufferfest left-field moment.
For the “story” there’s a bit of mention of Big M, Billboard but as they’re not really introduced at the beginning of the ride and this is all a bit pointless, and doesn’t work with the footage which doesn’t show these rides, Bluebell gets a single mention in text (copied from the OG?) in the last climb.
Given the footage is dominated by essentially two solo breakaways, prehaps tweak it to be that ISLAGIATT is to have a crack at a solo breakaway, but then the footage is edited to a be a cat and mouse game with the peloton - add a bit of jaws music back in, and the surges would have a bit more meaning.
Agreed.
There’s only a dozen or so continental riders I could name in an identity parade (sorry!), quality footage fitting with the effort and story is more important to me than the specific riders.
I love the stuff during rest intervals such as bike football, trials and snow biking as well as the black and white Pathe news clips and random SUF stuff (Hardennes real estate, “I’m from the Couchlandrians”) and my favourite “Stop after three efforts” from Defender…
I do quite like having riders I recognise. The storyline is the most important thing, but sometimes can be enhanced and provide some inspiration when watching some legends of the sport do their thing, like Lizzie Deign’s attack in Fight Club, MVdP being MVdP in revolver, Marianne Vos bossing it in Blender, I could go on. I do follow pro racing quite closely though.
When I first rode Who Dares I had no idea who any of the riders were except for a couple. But it didn’t matter because the storyline was great. Now that know more of the riders I still enjoy it, maybe a little bit more.
The Model is great both because of how it’s made and also because of who is in it. But at the same time, it would still be great if you didn’t recognize the riders.
Recharger is great regardless, but was even more fun when you recognized the few who were highlighted.
Hell Hath No Fury I can now pick out a few different riders including Vos and Emma Pooley and a few others, but it’s a good workout either way.
Joyride used to be fun because you were suddenly in a race with pros you recognized.
Point being, SUF storylines are what makes the videos great. And sometimes that means the riders are pointed out or recognizable and sometimes they are aren’t. And both can be done well. Sometimes it’s fun to try to race with Contador while other times the footage perfectly matches your effort and you don’t care who it is because you’re all suffering together.
Since the latest (and very good) remaster of Recharger, SYSTM plans are still being built with the Mike Cotty On Location Recharger ride. Not a big deal to swap it out in my calendar, but I would prefer the SUF ride be the default.
This is still a problem, except it’s now a little worse on the 2nd set.
I did the nm/ac intervals on level mode and the map/ftp ones on erg mode. Doing it on erg mode was extra annoying because you’d get the recover banner but the trainer keeps going for about a second and a half since the video is early.
