The latest Shokz Openrun Pro2 headphones are actually a combination of directed speaker (they call it air conduction)+bone conducting. I was pleasantly surprised and they blow away pure bone conducting. Decent wind today and they didn’t get drowned out.
Another thumbs up for Shokz- I was very impressed with the sound quality - I’ve got the OpenRun Pro (I’ve not found an excuse to upgrade to the OR2 yet which are even better).
I’ve another old pair from the Aftershokz days I use at the Flogging Station as I’m forced to suffer before the rest of the house wake up and worry that closed ear headphones would fill with Holy Water.
Everything else died, and use shokz now and last more than a year
I tried out some Aftershokz at the LA marathon in 2020 and they sounded amazing at the convention. But when I bought a pair for myself 2 years later the sound quality was terrible. Mostly treble and mid with no bass. And while I might put up with that in $20 headphones, I wasn’t going to keep expensive headphones ($100+) with bad sound. Maybe a different model would sound better, but I haven’t been able to convince myself to try again at those prices.
I currently have a set of JVC Nearphones. They were $45. The sound is still kind of iffy, and they don’t get as loud as I want them to be able to hear them clearly enough in a loud environment (i.e. in my pain cave with 3 fans running). But the form factor is good, they don’t go in my ears, I can hear things around me and people talking to me, they stay on, and the music and sound is “good enough” for the price.maybe next year I’ll try to the $75 model which gets better ratings on Amazon. This is the closest I’ll give to a recommendation. But I still only really give them 3 out of 5 stars.
Jabra 65t Active here - terrific sound, features and in-ear stability. Here is a new choice - EarFun Free 2S (this is the last gen model - I have no experience with the newer model. All a tiny step below the Jabras - sound quality about the same, but a different sonic profile, similar features (app) and maybe a touch less in-ear stability, but still really good. Should be 50%-30% of the price of the Jabras.
I’m really happy with the Shokz OpenRun. Bonus points for having the same charging cable as the TRACKR HEART RATE monitor.
I tried a pair of Jabra Elite 7 Active Gen 2 and while the fit was excellent, the sound is definitely not as good as my Airpod Pros. I have a feeling I won’t be able to get a product that does both high quality sound and running snugness. Maybe duct tape over the Airpods when I go running
I could never get the AirPod Pros to fit in my ears so I never experienced the sound quality others have talked about. The Jabras are good enough for their purpose and price and for my funny shaped ears have yet to be beat. Have you tried Bose or Beats?
Not yet… The search continues…
you may as well go for your Knighthood in the meantime
is there a running knighthood, while I’m still off the bike?
Ermmm…not officially but I’d 100% support you in a quest to do 10 eligible SUF vids (converted for running) back to back with no more than 10 mins between. I’m pretty sure you’d be the first!
This thread has taken an unexpected but interesting turn…
Hmmm…
Do it!!
Is there a precedent for converting bike activities to run, like how does that work?
Not being much of a runner, and never having done the 3 (iirc) SUF running vids, my best guess is to just follow the intensity spikes in terms of your effort. I’m not sure how you’d do that best without a video to look at or without cues but you could sorta kinda replicate them using the outdoor versions of eligible vids.
The outdoor versions smooth out the intervals and give you a range to work in rather than a specific target.
See HHNF as an example:
Of course, doing this on a treadmill would be “easier” cuz then you could just follow the targets.
While you won’t be Knighted or get any decals for doing this, you’d get my admiration and awe forevermore!
I tried a pair of Shokz Titanium and found the sound to be unacceptably harsh and unpleasant. Another big problem was that the loop around the back of my head would interfere with any jersey/shirt/jacket with a collar. Some of that may be the way the fit my head and may be different for others. And, that was a few years ago and newer designs might be better.
You could invest in a running powermeter (eg Stryd) and either recreate some of the Suf workouts (in outdoor mode for simplicity) into their ecosystem; or maybe they’d pair with SYSTM… (I’ve not tried that yet!). Power zones might be a bit different (but Stryd does something similar-ish to 4DP in recording max running power outputs at various durations to create power curve and adapting training accordingly!).
It’s an idea for a double knighthood I guess!
Given that I run almost precisely never, it would be a poor investment
I was just giving evil ideas for a completely unofficial running Knighthood quest to @gwydion
