Sexism and racism in old videos

I accept your reading and no one can argue with how you perceive this clip. I see all experiences through the lens of prior ones. Example: I saw ‘Buena Vista Social Club’ (the 1990s documentary) with my mother who experienced war and post war communism. I was elated and inspired by the film. So much, that I later traveled to Cuba. She found the film depressing and the life of the characters miserable. Same content, experienced in the same movie theater at the same time. Two very different messages received.

I’ve had that old Sufferfest flag hanging in my basement room for 10 years, and I’ve never perceived it in any way as relating to the Nazi flag…and I’m Jewish. And my wife, who is also Jewish has never said “what the heck is that Nazi flag doing in our house?” Personally I don’t get the issue regarding the flag but hey other people may be more perceptive than me and my missus.

As for all the other comments, if someone perceives something to be sexist, I accept it must be.

Your comment reminds of Jorge Luis Borges famous statement in his essay on “Kafka and His Precursors”:

“The fact is that every author creates his own precursors. His work modifies our conception of the past, as it will modify the future.”

This is true of all artistic experience. Once you have read, or seen, or heard an artistic performance of any kind, it changes your feelings about works of art even if they were created before that work.

That about sums it up. I do not say that he or anyone else for that matter doesn’t have or shouldn’t have the right to have feelings and give reign to them publicly. If he feels his 3 girls would be offended by the video (would he also have misgivings if it was Gaily Prancing Pages written there?) then I would hope that he stops his girls from reading in this very forum, what with Knights and Damsels inviting each other to a good flogging down by ye olde nailing post etc :rofl::rofl::wink:

Don’t take life to seriously and have fun whilst doing it

Greetings Sir (?) Glen, (and Sir Lisa of course ) I‘m glad you are enjoying life and not taking it too seriously, just wanted to say thanks for the explanation, as a newbie it can be very confusing as every forum has its own rules & regulations.

All the best

Hi All, OP here, and what a fabulous discussion!

Part of me was thinking the topic has probably run it’s course now, however a couple of recent posts made me want to throw some more fuel in to the fire…

First in response to Dame Kat’s post I’d just like to suggest that none of this should be taken personally, and issues of sexism don’t just belong to women - wouldn’t it be nice if anybody (whatever their sex or gender identity) could point out where there are potential inequalities or injustices and seek to address them without leaving it to the potential “victims” to have to resolve the issues? If some individuals like to put on a macho front and aren’t upset by anything that’s fine, but you shouldn’t discourage others from doing so.

Second point is that a lot of the focus of the discussion has been about things that cause or people that take offense. For me, the original point was more about one of equity rather than offense (I did point out that I hadn’t personally been offended). For me (and I’m not suggesting anyone else has to take this approach) I would like to see a world where all genders are treated similarly and have similar barriers and opportunities in as many respects as possible.

i.e. If we make a joke at the expense of one gender it would be great to see the jokes shared amongst others too. Where a video script relies on what could be perceived as a cliched/stereotypical view of “free and easy maids” (recognising the original intent may not have had sexual connotations) I’d like to see a similar dragging up of a cliched view of “free and easy” men. Or even better, avoid the sexual stereotyping altogether and come up with some of the more original humour that I’ve seen throughout loads of other sufferfest videos - which are really awesome I have to say.

[Ducking and running for cover…]

Awesome way to put this. And with that, I think we should let this thread die.
