The Suffering Socks of Sufferlandria

Fine. That’s an acceptable excuse to wear them but to post pics, two of them even, well that’s just rude :joy::joy::joy:

But do they match your tri suit?!

Those look like Targets to me. I have a drawerful.

Haha! Yep, that’s exactly when I got them. lol. I have 3 packs of them. When they’re new they are great cushy running socks. When they’re worn and flat they are great cycling socks.

There is an insane race here called K2. You’d all tough love it! Anyway, for a training ride for it, we went and rode 1/3rd of the course over 2 of the 3 worst climbs (there are many other nasty climbs but they’re not as bad). Then we turned around and rode back. Turns out the 2nd toughest climb on the course is truly horrific when done the other direction. That 14km gleeful fast descent was an absolute dog of a 9% slog on the way back up. This shot was taken once I reached the top. I was toast! Thankfully just a quick 15km descent and a 10km flat spin back down to the cars left after this. I don’t think I had more than about 30 watts left in the legs after this photo.

The socks are my favourites!!! Not official SUF socks but the colour scheme got me over that last big climb.

That sounds awful.

Our local tri course out by Lake Mead (that’s used for our club events as well as numerous other tri events) is all rolling hills and has the Sprint turnaround right at the top of a long but manageable 1 mile climb at about 4-5%. However, if you are riding the Olympic or longer distance, the other side of that hill is twice as steep. When I did my first course recon (two years ago) as a very green beginner (had only been cycling for about 6 months) I didn’t know where the turnaround was, so I rode over and down the other side and had to come back up. The road signs say 8% grade, but some sections in the middle are definitely at least 10%+. Mercifully it’s just under half a mile long. In my 39-28 I barely made it back up doing about 40rpms.

Ouch, that’s with TT big gearing too I presume??!?? Youtch!
What’s your lowest gearing on your bike?

Fortunately not a TT bike. It’s the titanium bike I inherited from my dad. Has a 53-39 on the front and 28-11 on the back. So 39-28 was my lowest gear. I don’t know how the heck he climbed Angeles Crest Hwy in it regularly.

:scream: that is ridiculous!!! I ride a 36-32 and am grateful for it every day! :joy:

My gearing in fine closer to home or on the trainer, but not as great for the rolling course especially for a beginner. It’s all up and down. Can’t wait to try it again in 2022 with over two years of Sufferfest training under my belt.

Now I’ll stop hijacking this thread. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Please, hijack away, Sir Evan. I am new to cycling. I learn more with every post. Everyone, everything, and every response has something to share and something to learn from. @emacdoug

Suffered the beating of 9 Hammers at 110% 4DP. Felt that the polka dots were fitting. Like dozens of nails driven into my feet with only colorful nailheads remaining…

9hammers at 100% (or was it even 110%?) sounds like retesting to me. Congratulations (or condolences to workouts at new numbers :stuck_out_tongue:)
Anyways, great job!

Yeah. I need to update my 4DP. I’m new to cycling and training, so my initial gains are going to be fast and big. Cadence took a dive the last couple hammers.
