Web Player

Having recently done the shift off of windows to Linux, it would be nice if a web player could be incorporated into the web portal for SYSTM to make it much more operating system agnostic, being as the web portal seems to do everything else anyway.

I only own an Android phione, no tablet, which isn’t great for this kind of use, and the alternatives which are linux specific such as scrcpy or an Android Emulator are going to be way beyond the average user (as a tech person myself I had a quick go but couldn’t get anyhting to work reliably for actually playing workout videos and connecting to devices).

I know theres the challenge of the data connections to overcome with bluetooth/ant via a browser (I didn’t look into it much, it’s not really my field), but something should be possible, even if it involved having to use a companion app on your phone, a bit like Zwiift used to (still?) has.

So is there any chance of that or did Wahoo already look into it and decide it’s not worth it? FWIW a web based player could make having to maintain independent OS version of the app redundant …

@donut_boy Not sure about a web player but Wahoo has acknowledged that they are rebuilding the player so maybe that allows for more flexibility with other OS as well or maybe not. My understanding is that when the SYSTM app was redeveloped they didn’t do much to the workout player so it is due for an upgrade.

The other issue with using a web based player is video quality. You could get fantastic video quality but other features would suffer. That’s why many of the bicycling programs are application based.
As to Linux, there are literally hundreds of variants and trying to keep all of them happy isn’t easy.

I don’t see why the other features would suffer, nothing else the app does is particularly complicated, bar the data between app and devices (i.e. a trainer, a hr monitor).

As to Linux, thats the point of a web app, you don’t have to support loads of variants, supporting the major browsers is enough and you don’t usually have to support too many differences between those (though you don’t have to support loads of variants of Linux apps anyway, though thats not really relevant here).

  • Contact Wahoo Support: Let them know you’d like a web player option. The more user requests they receive, the stronger the case for development.
  • Explore alternatives: In the meantime, consider screen mirroring tools like scrcpy (though you mentioned finding it challenging).
