From the Coaches: Training Considerations based on Female Physiology

thanks for the reference, here I am
@Rivarunnamomma to answer your question: it’s complicated (sorry, typical scientific answer), but in general, current research shows that there’s no ā€œone size fits allā€ solution when it comes to training and menstrual cycle. everything else you might read or hear is good marketing, but not scientifically validated.
this is what current research says (and what it doesn’t)

there was a very informative presentation about this topic a few months ago at an international sportsmed conference in Oslo with basically the same conclusion

The study did indicate that part of the problem is the social taboo and the lack of guidelines. It would seem to indicate that over time, some of that variability might disappear.

Even though I’m a male, been following this topic for more than a decade. There’s general consensus on some of the things said about the ā€œcycleā€ but like many things, it comes down to the individual. There was a general line of thought that it was best to race at the begining of the cycle, but that’s been blown apart after much study. The one thing that does apply is most generic training plans created for men, need serious ā€œtweakingā€ when it comes to women. Hopefully, we’ll see more consideration for the needs of the individual, regardless of sex and more adaptation to the specific needs of the female body and the effects of the various female hormones (and men aren’t exempt from those effects either).
