Good luck Alex, we’ll cheer you up to the gates.
Love it. Crush it!
3/10 down. In the groove. Fresh socks!
6/10. Another pair of fresh socks.
Keepin’ it fresh, Alex. 4 more to go!
9/10. One last pair of fresh socks. I really like fresh socks.
Nice work Alex! Almost there!
Well done @AlexEllermann! Congratulations!
Wow well done! Congratulations!
Thanks, friends. Quest numbers: $745 for charity (across three Facebook pages) and 133.77 miles.
Lessons Learned:
-
People talk about having several pairs of bike shorts ready to go. I had four pairs of socks down in the basement, too. I wish I had even more. There’s nothing like fresh, dry socks.
-
I’m really glad I listened to the people who recommended a combination of sweet, savory, and neutral foods. I went with bananas, protein bars, peanut butter and bananas on a bagel (cut the bagel up into bit-sized bits), and a bowl full of tortellini with no sauce for lunch. Also, iced coffee was a real life-saver there at the end.
-
I put The Omnium at #7. Mistake. it nearly broke me and I had to switch to level mode on some of the big pulls. If you love The Omnium, put it earlier in the sequence - while you still have plenty of juice in your legs.
-
Unless you’re really into bike racing, have other videos ready to watch. I watched a season of The Expanse on my phone while my iPad ran Suff. OBTW, The Expanse is really good.
-
I found that setting my timer to 8:30 gave me time to have a decent break and get back on the bike well under the 10-minute limit.
*I advertised my fundraising on the Sufferlandria and Sufferlandrian Knighthood Quest Planning Committee Facebook pages, as well as my personal FB page. I raised the most money on my personal page, but the other two helped, too.
*During the week or two prior to the attempt, I never hesitated to pause a workout to tweak my Kickr settings, my saddle angle, or what have you. You’re going to want everything dialed in!
That’s it, off the top of my head. Suffer on!
Congrats! I hope to follow you this Saturday… great tips I plan on incorporating, especially the tortellini!
Happy to help. I look forward to cheering you on!
It’s not that I’m that into bike racing, but I needed to fully engage in the process. For me, I needed to be 100% in the game so watched only the vids on my list, turned off all social media (except to post to FB a pic and a checkmark as each vid was done). My family knew not to come down to the basement and I entered radio silence on my phone. Nice fundraising effort Sir Alex! I managed to raise $300 for my charity (but it was almost all my own money, lol).
I picked all videos I would enjoy. I also really enjoy being on the bike even if it is indoors. Other than posts to FB in between videos, I was locked into the videos the entire time. I was laser focused for 10 hours. It was a mission.
I can’t wait to do it again. When I get permission from the misses, of course.
Congrats!!
Update: The Day After
I am really, really glad I planned for a day off after Quest Day. I feel wiped out, like I just flew an all-nighter. Fifteen minutes with Abi, then walking the dog around the neighborhood, is about all I’m good for today.
Lol!! Relatable. Took me 2 weeks before I touched my bike again
Okay here goes setting the KoS attempt date:
Friday May 28th
Set List:
- ISLAGIATT - 111 (Endurance)
- Cobbler - 106 (Endurance)
- The Hunted - 61 (Climbing)
- Violator - 63 (Speed)
- Butter - 58 (Endurance)
- GOAT - 42 (Endurance)
- Attacker - 53 (Endurance)
- Blender - 102 (Endurance)
- Thin Air - 60 (Climbing)
- Nine Hammers - 58 (Speed)
714 mins 11 hrs 54 mins + 90 mins transition time.
13:24
Based on what I’ve read here:
- Endurance focused, start at 70% FTP (it just kicked up from 208-223 after 4DP test on 4/27)
- Dry shorts after 2 rides - may need to be 3 for me. Only own 3 that fit rn or buy a new pair.
- Have dry socks at the ready.
- Variety of food/gel taste bland, savory, maybe even some soup.
- Chilled Water Bottles a good idea, too.
Any more thoughts/advice?
Thanks - B
@itsbrianegan Add lots of chamois cream. Good luck!
