KoS Quest - The O.G. (completed! 🄹)

Now that is awesome!

It would look just a little bit better with a KoS sticker decal on it…

no pressure

I know this war was fought a long time ago. Stickers are meant to be removed. Decals aren’t. Are you saying you’ll remove your Knighthood decal from wherever you placed it? Only on transfer of said stead and you will find it isn’t easy either.

Pedantic but interesting. :smirk: FWIW, I’d have thought the opposite would be true. I think of decals more as like the plastic things I stick on my laptop, or around my lab. Whereas stickers tend to be paper-based or something and make a mess when you try to remove them.

ouch, I stand corrected. Decals it is…

Lost in translation I suppose

Actually, it’s the opposite. Decals were paper based and you wetted them to activate the glue and then slid them onto where you wanted them. Placed them and let them dry. The idea was you were never going to remove them. Stickers were plastic/metal and were put in using a backing adhesive. They are designed to be removed and put back on. Most people put on stickers and never remove them…

Actually I had the same thought as well. Never knew it was the opposite way around as Sir James mentioned it.

Just a curious question, what about those price tags on books for instance, those that they stick on? Are those stickers or decals?

I can vouch for Woolie Boolie socks. Absolutely bloody fantastic. And not just for cold weather - because they’re pure wool, they’re wonderfully breathable - I used them most recently for three consecutive days of 200 mile rides in a heatwave recently (UK heatwave - 30° each day) and I had no issues with my feet at all. I’ll never buy anything else.

KoS prep update from the training dungeon:

Had the long Saturday effort today. 7 hours 30 minutes, 125 miles, +/- 500 total TSS, 4100kJ. Basically 75% of the full KoS O.G. And guys, I gotta say - I get it now. The temptation to have just continued on for two more videos and get it done, rather than having to do it again would’ve been something.

(actual footage of @Glen.Coutts)

To avoid temptation, I built prep day out of a bunch of stuff I’ve not done before, so:

  1. Tasmania: Richmond
  2. Med Coast: CƓte Vermeille
  3. Santos Festival 1
  4. French Pyrenees: Lac de Cap de Long

and - ironically enough -

  1. ISLAGIATT

So yeah, that hurt a little. My after-action review (for myself those considering the attempt in the future):

  • Feel like I dialed in the pain meter pretty well. Found a good effort % that I held for the duration. Definitely suffered. Maybe not TOO much, but figure adding two more hours onto the effort will take care of that.
  • SO glad I did the century plan this summer for my ride end of September. The KoS quest is clearly an endurance event. The butt-in-the-seat time really helped. OTOH, was concentrating on ā€œ10 videos back-to-backā€ and nothing else - forgot the mileage. So a century end of September, 125 (virtual) miles today, and probably 150 miles for the KoS OG early November. I may just nap all winter.
  • Longest effort I’ve ever done on the indoor trainer, by far. Very different from outside riding, and magnified by the length of the effort. Legs were fine…mostly…but my knees took a pounding from the limited flex of the bike mounted on the trainer.
  • These were mostly much longer efforts than my actual KoS line-up, which added fatigue, with fewer breaks (which was intentional).
  • 10 MINUTE BREAKS ARE AWESOME. And 10 minutes is a LOT of time if you plan.
  • Impossible to use too much lube.
  • Good tips on kit changes every other workout - just getting into dry bibs, socks and jersey was a morale boost.
  • Other than almost dropping the pickle jar(!), fueling went really well. And I was able to go on all real food with no issues (PBJ, bananas, pickles) with just a couple of stroopwafel to break it up…because stroopwafel!
  • Going with a Pro Ride was…a choice. Was thinking maybe GvA could introduce a new supplement to the KoS - complete 6-7 ProRides back-to-back and earn your Sufferlandrian Pro Card? National Team invite? Oy.
  • ISLAGIAT at the end. Yeah…not so much.

So two weeks of taper before the big day. Feeling pretty good. Lots of good tips and advice on these forums, so thanks to all that have graciously shared their experience.

@CPT_A Interesting idea. Great summary - you are ready for the challenge! Take some time to do the pre-event checklist mental toughness module so you have a backup plan if things go sideways.
