Learning to be a technical cyclist

Hello everyone! I’m a novice cyclist that has had success “mashing” the pedals. I want to become a more technical, proficient, and efficient cyclist so I invested in the KICKR MOVE and CLIMB. However, I am struggling with ride interface and trainer settings. I looked for tutorials to help me from crate to great, but haven’t found anything. Specifically looking for things I need to do before doing a 4DP assessment and training plan. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hey @TinaB395, welcome to the forums. That’s a killer bit of kit you got for yourself! Assuming you’re all set up with the latest firmware (for both the Move and the Climb) then you might want to take a little stroll around The Company support site for the SYSTM app. https://support.wahoofitness.com/hc/en-us/sections/5183647197586-SYSTM

Most questions that most people have about using it are in there.

As for a couple of “pro” (I am NOT a pro :stuck_out_tongue: ) tips, generally it’s a good idea to pick a couple of vids (my personal favourites are The Sufferfest vids) and test everything out to make sure it works as expected. I.e. sensors are connected, power is reporting as expected, the different modes (level, where you shift your own gears, or ERG where resistance is set for you) work as expected. Try a variety of efforts etc. etc.

Prepping for your first 4DP via the Full Frontal Fitness test has its own recommendations and its own page. Pacing is everything on that test so it sometimes takes doing it a few times before you really feel you’ve nailed it (though those few times won’t be back-to-back because the test itself is daunting and exhausting, if you’ve done it right). Check out this support page https://support.wahoofitness.com/hc/en-us/articles/360021387460-How-to-get-your-most-accurate-Full-Frontal-Results

There’s a more general section on 4DP and fitness testing in SYSTM here that includes the page I mentioned above https://support.wahoofitness.com/hc/en-us/sections/4403352526610-4DP-and-Fitness-Assessments-Full-Frontal-and-Half-Monty

Good luck and don’t hesitate to come back if you have other questions. You’ll find that most folks here are pretty keen to help.

Edit: I’ll add that there are also about a dozen pretty good intro videos in the SYSTM app library itself:

Dear Pro Friend,

I pray all is well in your world!!!

I have some more NewBee :honeybee: questions to ask. I’m struggling to understand the difference between ERG mode and levels while using the Climb (with the KICKR). I’m used to the NordicTrack bike (please, forgive me :folded_hands:t2:), where both resistance and incline are automatically adjusted. I initially thought ERG mode would provide the same experience, but I find that it keeps the resistance at a relatively easy, steady state while automatically adjusting the incline. When I switch to levels mode, I can change and control my own gears and resistance, but I notice that the Climb does not adjust and remains at the indicated percentage. I find this somewhat frustrating because I want to improve my current skill, condition and technical riding while on a variety of inclines. Am I able to determine and set my level of resistance in ERG mode! I feel like a circus clown  pedaling in ERG sometimes.

And then there’s the Half Monty Ramp test! I’m pretty sure I did that ALL wrong.

Do you all have a support group for all this technology!?!? :joy:

Sincerely,

Clueless in the US.

As in most questions, the answer is, it Dependz®

If you are using SYSTM the Climb changes are baked in (not in all vids but in many see this outdated list)but will only be applied if you are using ERG mode and ONLY if you have the Climb unlocked (there’s a spiral corded “remote” where pressing the centre button will switch the climb between locked and unlocked. Locked is used when you want to increase and decrease the incline on your own using the up/down arrow on the “remote” itself. Unlocked is what is needed if you want the App you’re using to control the incline/decline.)

If you are using Zwift (or any sim iirc), in ERG mode there will be no change to gradient in the Climb and if you want to change the gradient you’ll need to do that with the remote. In level mode in Zwift (aka Slope mode) with the Climb unlocked, Zwift will change resistance based on the terrain you are riding and you will also need to change gears yourself. Zwift has been asked to implement gradient changes during ERG workouts since the Climb first came out and, afaik, it has never been implemented.

If I understood your questions though, I suspect you’ve had the Climb in locked mode during your ERG workouts. As to adjusting resistance during ERG workouts, again, in SYSTM you can increase the intensity of any workout on desktop once you’ve started a workout/video by tapping the up/down arrow keys on your keyboard, or going to the gear icon then the settings tab and adjust to your preference:

And if the resistance is waaaaay too low, it is possible you messed up during the Half Monty (welcome to the “I messed up a fitness test” club).

You can adjust your athlete profile to increase numbers to whatever you think is reasonable for you, fiddle around with them, and see what works best before trying another test:
Tap your profile icon, then athlete settings, then edit whichever metric you like to whatever you like

YOU ARE AWESOME :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:!! I will try these suggestions and look at the Open 15 option for the curve.

Have a blessed day!!!

so, fyi, but you probably know this, the open vids dont have any gradient encoded. They’re great for testing out FTP settings up/down in ERG and for testing Level mode for varying cadences and power output. What you won’t see or feel in an open vid is changes to MAP (5 minute), AC (1 minute) or NM (5 second) power. You’d need to test that on something else.

To test the impact of different numbers in FTP/MAP/AC Mini Blender is great or Micro Rangers where you could also test out NM would be perfect for that:
