This morning I completed the new SBT Gravel workout. At the beginning of the workout, it tells you to “Settle in as this is going to be an entirely Z2 workout.” but during the course of the workout, there were a few times that it was telling me that I should be in Z4 HR. Is this because HR is an individual thing? It just seems odd that the workout tells you that this will be entirely in Z2 but during certain intervals of the workout the app tells you that you should be in Z4 HR.
Yeah, based on the workout profile I don’t see why you would ever reach anything other than Z2 or maayyyybe a little bif of Z3. Z4 seems like a stretch.
Yeah. I was entirely in low-mid Z2 for the vast majority of the ride with a couple of short stints into low Z3 during a couple of the standing intervals.
So it’s not a tempo workout as the title suggests.
@sir_james.p A tempo effort is 76-90% of you FTP. There were a couple of intervals where I was in this zone, topping out at 85% of my FTP, but for the majority of the workout I was below this effort with my HR staying primarily in Z2. Maybe a “tempo effort” is an individual thing as well? My idea of a true tempo effort is an effort that maintains a Z3 HR, also known as “Sweet Spot” If I recall correctly. I will say that my legs did feel just a bit fatigued/tired afterwards but that could have also been because of The Wretched workout on Thursday. Just my thoughts on it. Tell me what you think once you give it a go.
Likewise, I think of tempo as comfortably uncomfortable and not a workout that’s entirely z2. Odd that it says the workout will be all z2 in the video when the thread about it says it has tempo and sub-threshold sections.
It’s a bit of an odd workout in terms of power zones. Efforts are too high for Z2 at times so it’s not a pure Z2 workout, but overall is too low for a tempo/z3 workout. ![]()
