Hey all, on my recovery week. Just kinda curious, from a big picture, what are the tradeoffs of doing absolutely nothing all week versus the planned “active recovery” week? Surely there’s a risk of “overtraining” during a recovery week and not getting adequately recovered, but what’s the downside of the do nothing approach? Any other tradeoffs? Thanks!

Doing nothing for 7 days will impact fitness negatively but not massively. Ideally an active recovery week will offer a low enough training stress week to adequately recover while maintaining more fitness. A full week of the bike is normally very good for a mental/psychological break though and common for people to do even midway through the season so as to prevent mental burnout

I treat recovery weeks as mental breaks, I’ll still do the longer or more structured workouts (even Gorges de la Nesques which is no way a recovery ride!), but instead of recovery ride or inspiration rides like Fursa I’ll go for a walk - maybe even to the pub…
Suffering is hard so don’t underestimate the need to go easy occasionally
