Understanding Wahoo Metrics: Athlete Profile

Your FTP or race time only tells a fraction of the story. Relying on a single metric to measure your fitness means your workouts are calibrated around a simplified version of your actual athletic ability—leaving potential gains on the table.

Check out our latest video on how we measure full-spectrum fitness:

In this deep dive, discover how the Wahoo Athlete Profile utilizes multi-dimensional metrics (4DP for cycling and 3DP for running) to uncover your unique strengths, target your specific limiters, and personalize your training. It’s time to stop guessing and start training smart.

Once you unlocked your Wahoo Athlete Profile, what was the biggest surprise—did your rider type match what you expected, or did it completely redefine how you target your weaknesses?

Normally I’d let stuff like this slide but the rider profile is far from a new thing with wahoo. SUF started it and officially launched it waaaaay back in October 2017!

While the look of it has changed over the years the principles haven’t.

Maybe this is new for runners but it’s hardly news for cyclists in the SUF/Wahoo universe.

Also, fwiw, Mike’s explanation is not a deep dive.

Here’s a deep dive

Hey Glen!

Thank you for sharing and we are glad you are pointing this out. Yes, the cycling athlete profile is not a new thing to the wahoo ecosystem, but the running version and the suite of metrics and experience that follow, absolutely is! We are re-posting and building education around these metrics to help everyone understand what they can unlock in our training ecosystem! Understanding the importance of 4DP/3DP helps athletes understand how DTL, Training Capacity and Fitness bring it all together.

Thanks so much for sharing the deeper dive post.

Happy training :man_biking: !!

all good. Fwiw, I’m a BIG fan of the new metrics (he says as he hovers dangerously close to detraining :stuck_out_tongue: )

I mean I’m agreeing with both of you.

I always knew that you really needed to train all the energy systems and work on your weakness. That’s not revolutionary.

Well I ended up doing lots and lots of Z2 and a couple of sprints. The Athlete Profile really made it clear I needed to work on my MAP.

Again, not a new insight. I can now go back and look at the big flat spot in my power profile and see it, and I’m sure a coach would have noticed it right away. It was the easy presentation that did it for me.

FTP and MAP way up, life is good.
