Wahoo Roam/Bolt/Ace - Radar Error

Wahoo Elemnt users with Garmin rear radar devices (maybe other makes aswell): may experience frequent Radar Error messages. The message appears like the auto-pause message with large black background, obscuring the page in use. Requires manual press of the centre button to dismiss and return to the page in use.

Radar errors are triggered by some cars, traffic lights etc. Since pressing centre Dismiss button always returns normal function - why can’t Wahoo do this automatically, i.e. simply flag ‘Radar Error’ for 5 sec, then clear?

Any other Wahoo users troubled by this regular annoyance?

Haven’t ridden outdoors since October but I never got frequent radar errors. Using ACE or the Bolt3 and a Varia RTL510.

First, the radar error really should be red like the Live Track Error message, it’s something more important than a custom notification or a route cue.

That said, Wahoo made a design decision for a number of the messages to the persistent until you clear them, and this is one of them. I kind of like it, so I guess we disagree on this one.

And yes, the radar function on ELEMNT is the same regardless of radar brand - I get all the same functionality and stuff between my Wahoo and Magene radars.

Hi Richie,

I remain curious about the rationale for manual intervention of this notification. Is it because there are radar failure modes where ‘green line/ no car’ could be displayed, i.e. false negative?

So far as I can determine, temporary traffic lights with radar detection and some cars trigger Radar Error and this is just a short duration event. On some rides I’ve had multiple events.

BTW, I ride with Live Tracking. Often through Clumber Park/ Sherwood Forest with no mobile/ cell coverage. Don’t appear to be getting those notification any longer?

Riding with Roam 3 and Varia RTL715, both have latest firmware.

You get the LT error:

  1. When there’s a communication issue between the ELEMNT and the app
  2. The phone loses cell service for 10 minutes. I’ve had it where I effectively don’t have good cell service for a while but you occasionally hit a roaming tower and the 10 min resets.

Honestly I’ve never had the radar error, but they’ve decided that everything LT and radar related is safety important and gets a high priority.

Hi Richie,

I guess you’re in North America from reference to ‘cell phone’. I’m in UK, so this could explain different experience of Radar Errors.

A bit of Google research, assuming correct, highlights the following:

  1. Garmin Varia Rtl715 and 515 use K band 24.05 GHz to 24.25 GHz.
  2. USA traffic management and Police speed cameras typically Ka band 34 to 35GHz
  3. UK traffic management and police K band 24.05 to 24.15 GHz

Besides my experience of Radar Errors many other users, several YouTube cycling content providers have the same issue. Many UK Police cars have speed radar and ANPR. Definitely get triggered by some traffic lights.

BTW, thanks for info about 10min filter on LT lost notification. Maybe filter time extended in recent firmware update or cell coverage improved.

Regards,

Steve

A lot of the older blind spot monitoring systems for motor vehicles work on the same 24 GHz as the Varia radar systems.
