My first Wahoo Roam stopped updating in December of 2023. I continued for months trying to update it. I tried 6 or 7 different networks, factory resets, and unpairing/re-pairing the device with the Elemnt app, nothing worked.
I had to field retire my device in late June or early July and get a new one which also will not update. Again I have tried 10 different WiFi networks, including two different phone hotspots, factory resets, and unpairing/re-pairing with the Elemnt Companion app.
What can I do to get this fixed so I can update my device?
I have tried different networks, I have tried different phone hotspots, I have manually selcted the āUpdateā option from within the Roam itself; all for nothing.
I cannot express how incredibly frustrating this is. Between lack of updating ability, and the fact that my Rival continually loses data while I am riding, I am beyond angry with my Wahoo experience.
Something needs to be done about this, because if I cannot trust the devices and the tech behind them to be reliable so I can get the most out of my workouts, I have to go to a different product. I cannot continue to make it halfway through a ride to have the Rival or Roam lose then ārecoverā data. Countless times I have lost data an hour or so into a ride, and then again two minutes from home, turning what should be a 60+ mile ride into a 20 mile ride, losing all of my data.
Please fix this. This is absurd that I cannot trust my devices which I paid so much money for. Please fix this.
Yeah, I have reached out to support on several occasions, and they have not been actual help in resolving the problem. Support is what got me the warrantied Roam after I field retired my first one, but everything they recommended was something I tried, and it went nowhere. If I am going to have the same issues with my new device, which is looking likely, Iām getting a Garmin. I canāt do this with an untrustworthy device.
Currently Iām on FW WC24-15475 trying to update to FW WC50-17026.
Youāve got the ROAM v2 right? When I look at the firmware page, I donāt even see WC24-15475.
I see WC19-15475 from November 2022. I assume youāve tried a full factory reset? Also, are you sure youāve got enough room on the unit? Sometimes people have nearly ALL the world maps installed and rarely, if ever need them. Might be worth pairing that down to what you actually need. For me itās just Canada and a couple of US states.
Edit: Oh, and fwiw, I only update from the ROAM v2 itself. Iāve had mixed results when using the Companion App.
Yeah, Iāve tried full factory reset three times. I do have enough space on the unit, I didnāt download any maps, Iāve got a little over 1 GB of space right now.
I canāt even get the update on the Roam itself to update properly. It says itās checking updates, but never actually installs anything, and I retain the same FW.
I hear your frustration. Iāve been using a ROAM v2 since they came out and itās been pretty solid. There is a little trick that worked for me when I got stuck in an update loop some time ago.
Iāll see if I can find it? For it to work youāll need to be able to connect to a computer and actually see the internal files. Are you able to do that?
Edit: youāre doing this at your own risk (I donāt work for wahoo) as I got the advice from Reddit and it worked for me some time ago. 2 methods:
1: Delete folder āsystem_update_elemntā on pc and reboot device and update again.
2: check the sdcard\system_update_elemnt folder and delete all files in it, reboot and update again.
I have a bolt 2 that will not update. I had to take it to an at&t store and the were able to get it to update l i also tried several different networks. Nothing worked you may try that.
Iām an customer. They connected to their wifi. And was very helpful. You may try your carrier. Still canāt figure out why I canāt get it to update. Hope it helps keep me informed
Make sure you find a tech savvy representative. She said she had to go in the app. Iāve had 3 updates since but not worth going back for another update yet.
It was a last resort for me. Support didnāt help. Tried everything they suggested. I know more people have to have this issue. They need to do something to fix the problem.
Surely Wahoo must have an in-house tool to update firmware and maps via USB.
If so, why not just release this to the public and allow you to download the files to your computer first. It would seem so much easier and solve a lot of peoples issues.
I also had trouble updating, and the quoted solution fixed it for me, and my ROAM 1 is always up to date (although ELEMNT app constantly prompts me to update when ROAM is connected even though I have the latest firmware).
