A path forward

Surly I’m not the only one that is struggling to find a path forward with their indoor training/riding due to the SUF remasters. All of my favorite workouts have been remastered and the remasters just don’t offer the same excitement and engagement as the original ones did. I have not done one of the remasters.

If you have been affected by this in a similar way, what are you doing (except for cancelling your subscription) in finding a path forward?

I’m not going down with the ship. I didn’t ask for any of this and I don’t owe Wahoo anything.

There are plenty of other cycling platforms. It’s either Trainerroad for the AI or Rouvy for the real world rides for me. I’ve never liked Zwift but there are plenty of alternatives.

Only reason I’m still here is the yoga/mobility but the Dynamic Cyclist should take care of that. If my wife joins me it won’t even work out that much more expensive as Rouvy offer couples and family memberships.

I’ll stick around until the indoor cycling season starts but I very much doubt anything will have changed by then.

I bought a mountain bike and carried on riding outside through the winter season. Turned out to be a lot more fun plus I came into the spring road season in better shape than previous years.

Joyride being ruined is a serious red flag for me coming back. If Cobbler and/or Team Scream go the same way then it is extremely unlikely that I ever return.

I’m continuing to enjoy non-remastered SUF vids. This week I rode The Model and Defender. Last week G.O.A.T., The Chores, and The Way Out. In spite of the remaster problems, there are still plenty of great workouts to keep me happy and suffering, including various OL and Pro Rides workouts. So my patience is still not worn thin. Keeping my hopes up!

For me as I have said before once I realised a couple of vids had been remastered I immediately used my old Mac and closed off the wifi on it to keep all the other rides from being remastered, I only lost Igniter and Primers all the rest are the same. I can then double record on my watch for upload to Strava. My new Mac has all the remastered vids but only if I click on the new workout video is available so either way it’s my choice. As for other cycling platforms I would use Open Road / Bike The World which I think is cheaper than any other app out there but only available on a PC. Maybe Fulgaz as well, the rest I have tried and wouldn’t go back to using them if I’m honest.

Yeah. I got to the point where I was watching other vids on YouTube etc during the workouts, things like MTB POVs, etc. At the point I didn’t think I was getting the value from Systm so switched to Trainerroad, which of course doesn’t have vids. The AI and adaptive plans are interesting, but a work in progress, IMO. I did Rouvy for a while and that was OK, but I mainly want plans with structured workouts so TR it has been. I might look at other alternatives this winter when I get serious about indoor riding again.

I have gone over to Rouvy as my go to platform and will be dumping zwift and wahoo when each subscription expires. Take the time now to download all of the fit files of your favourite Wahoo and Zwift workouts and put them into Rouvy so you can ride them there and ride any route on them. Rouvy has no sound at the moment but this is something they are looking into for the future. The graphics are a trillion times better than Zwift (I rode a route in Australia that I know well and itrwas exactly like being there ) The interface and home screen has just been improved and it makes Zwift look like something from the early 80’s AND it is the cheapest of the lot!!!

I’m def not a fan of Zwift and find Rouvy’s real world vids to be much more to my liking than cartoon worlds. That said, I find vids of road rides relatively tedious compared to mtb povs so Rouvy doesn’t really do it for me either. I did like Rouvy’s group rides, but they’re not structured workouts. So, for workouts, I queue up a vid (typically sound off), some music, and start the workout. TR has a mini workout player that lies on top of the video content so that workouts out well.

I’m still doing a combo of SYSTM and Training Peaks Virtual.

SYSTM’s 4DP is still the best testing-training combo I’ve found, so I’m sticking with it until it’s gone unless something better comes along.

And The Sufferfest has been the best training videos by far. So I’m going down with the ship at this point.

Join Cycling, Rouvy and Systm for me.
Join Cycling - tried it for a few weeks initially and was disappointed. It basically shut me down for 2 weeks (6 rides to 2!) telling me I needed more recovery. Finally decided to give it a real chance and after my first 14 week plan with it (a few weeks into my second) I could not imagine going back to a non-adaptive platform (both hours/ days available each week, and adding rides or changing a workout with your own ride and Join changing your upcoming workouts). It took 3-4 weeks for Join to get to know me - now seems to have settled on 5 days/ week and doesn’t get as “upset” if I throw something else in. A good steady build, and Intervals.icu agrees with where it puts me on weekly load/ ramp/ form etc. Most importantly I feel good and on those days I’m really fatigued post workout it always seems to have a rest day planned after.
No videos so for indoor workouts I use Rouvy routes for Endurance, Tempo, Sweet Spot and Strength workouts (just import the workouts). Even then I get bored (now in winter I frequently have 3x 2 hour workouts on the trainer during the week) so I use Rouvy to record and give me the ERG changes but will watch race footage or sometimes something else on Netflix when I can. TdF is coming!! Fortunately most of the VO2 max and NM workouts have been placed when I can ride outside (download them to my Karoo). Occasionally I swap in similar Sufferfest workouts but with the Remasters this is becoming harder. So now I use System predominantly for Yoga and Half Monty (I know I know, should be FF …).

I guess my main concern from a workout point of view is that I feel Wahoo has - not surprisingly - returned its near full focus to hardware development, its core business. And let’s be honest, they make great products. With so many cycling apps available earning the dime from one’s training app must have become harder and harder. And those that have it as their core business are racing ahead. At one point it looked like Systm was going to do that - with Sufferfest as a core channel. I don’t see that happening now and I would imagine from a business point-of-view that makes sense. I’d be very happy to be proven wrong.

I feel the need to comment that golf is my “A” sport and my use of SYSTM is primarily for the fitness and cross-training (yoga, strength, mental toughness) to take my golf to the next level.

On that note, the MTP was transformational for my on-course attitude.

I get the attraction of golf, I’m just waaaay too impatient. I like hitting the ball, I’m just hopeless at finding it afterwards. That, and I can’t count for the life of me. After reaching 5, I lose track and just tell whoever is keeping score to mark me down for the max, whatever that is. :old_man:t2: :face_with_spiral_eyes:
