Question for coaches and Minions: I get that Wahoo dropped the GCN workouts due to licensing issues, and subsequently changed them to no-vids, but did you also (apparently to me) modify the workouts?
As an example, I had the Tempo Increasing Cadence: 6x2 on the menu yesterday, which per @Rupert corresponded to the former GCN Strength Endurance workout. That workout, when available - and still on YouTube - was 22 minutes. Since the plan I was working off of was pre-12/31, it showed 22 minutes on my calendar. But when I jumped into it yesterday, it was suddenly 30 minutes?
Only reason I ask is I thought I would queue up and sync all the prior GCN’s to the GCN video online, but suddenly I had 8 more minutes to deal with and couldn’t figure out where you guys spliced in the extra time in order to make the effort sync.
TL;DR: in addition to switching GCN to no-vid, did you also modify the workouts, and how and where?
Hey Sir Ian,
YEs we did have the Sports Science team review and modify the workout as part of the licensing was not only the video but also the workout so we have made some adjustments to them.
That’s interesting.
Are you saying that despite them refusing a decade worth of user requests the put an ftp% on their videos they do actually provide an ftp% with the workout?
Also, how do you enforce strict licensing on something like tempo with surges (or under overs if you turned the workout up 5%)? That’s a pretty standard workout you can find on other online resources or coaching books.
Thanks for the new titles. I really like some of these workouts and I am glad the workout is not gone, as are often some of my go to workouts when on the road. Help a lot!!
Any plans to make videos for these new workouts? I liked the GCN videos, and don’t enjoy no vids, the reason I use SYSTM over trainer road is because it’s more engaging.
Any chance of getting GCN videos back. I assume the licensing issues were around the Warner brothers purchase of GCN. Wondering if the recent closure of GCN+ impacts that.
@sir_james.p The workouts are still in the library in the NoVid category. My recollection was that the renewal of the GCN license came up and they couldn’t work out a deal to keep the video portion in the library. Wahoo owned the workouts.
Yep, I know we have the no vid versions but was wondering is there’s any chance of getting the videos back. Wondered if the license issues came about when Warner Brothers bought all the content.
Warner still own GCN, they closed GCN+ to force people who want to watch cycle racing to subscribe to the more expensive Discovery+ streaming service. This suggests it is unlikely that they will want to licence any of their content to other platforms.
There are plenty of GCN workouts still available on their YouTube chanel, that could be done in Level mode.
And Discovery+ will have LESS cycling content. I’m not paying 49 plus for less. I give less about the junk they proport to stream. I’m not a 16 year old who wants to watch garbage.
Older videos done on their main channel (including some of the Sufferfest sessions and some with real-world outdoor cycling footage - which are the ones I prefer)
Newer videos on their GCN Training channel (mostly indoor-studio-style videos without any outdoor footage)
I think I’m somewhat of an outlier on the forum in liking a lot of the GCN workout videos and miss having them available in SYSTM, but I still use their YouTube videos somewhat often.
You and me alike. It was the GCN training videos that got me started into “proper” bike training about 4 years ago at the age of 66. This led me onto here. Neal was always featured on their normal videos and I suspect it was him that amalgamated workouts into videos for their channel that ended up on Systm, so yes I do miss them
I have not, but be forewarned, I think most of the NoVids were modified so they no longer sync to the GCN videos. That said, it may be easier to just use Level mode if you want to follow along. Some may match more than others, that one is at least close in length!
