How do you stay motivated through a winter of indoor riding?

Winter is when my riding moves almost entirely indoors, and staying motivated through those months is always a challenge. Without the change of scenery, the same room and the same routine can start to feel repetitive. I have been trying to keep a loose weekly routine and set small goals, so I still feel some progress even when the weather keeps me inside. What keeps you going through the indoor months, and how do you stay motivated until spring?

The main thing I do to maintain motivation is give myself some objectives for the winter months. I usually look at what I want to accomplish next season, then determine what it is I need to do over the winter that will help get me there.

For me, that usually means prioritizing strength work for 3 sessions/week for a few months over putting in time on the bike. I follow a progressive strength plan (at home) with the objective of increasing muscle size and strength. I mostly do virtual riding a couple of times a week in between strength sessions but keep my effort low.

Around mid-winter, I’ll transition to focussing on the bike again by following a training plan in Systm.

My workouts are planned, there is a purpose to them, and my activities are tracked. Whether it’s on the bike or off the bike, there’s almost always a purpose for my exercise and that’s what keeps me motivated to stick with it.

I’ve tricked myself into thinking it’s fun, the endorphins are worth it and it’s better than putting 20 layers on and riding in the dark
