The Knight Rides! 2026

THE 2ND ANNUAL KNIGHT’S JOUSTING (on Deca Dash)

Originally this Event was created by Sir Ian @CPT_A, then called THE 1ST ANNUAL KNIGHT’S JOUST CRITERIUM.

This year though we will change the rules a bit and try to make it even more fun. If it doesn’t work out that way? There is still the 3rd edition next year building on the ideas.

The rules for this edition as Issued by the Sufferlandrian Ministry of Chivalry:

1. Thou shalt ryden y‑bounden!
2. Thou shalt ryden swifter ech lappe thou goest!
3. See thou put forth thy utmost myght and wynne thyne honour!
*)

The route starts with a warm up. As soon as we reach the start of the 10 Laps (Jarvis Laps rev.), it will get serious. Will the Knights be victorious once again?

Start with us into another grand season of the Knight Rides!

Everyone is welcome, Knights and Citizens. Even if you forget your jousting lance at home and just join for the ride.
While this route is all about getting faster we ride banded, so no one is left behind.
Guaranteed 100% GvA approved and Couchlandrian free.
The Knight Rides! are presented by the SUF Ministry of Heritage and Tourism.

*)
1. You shall ride banded!
2. You shall ride faster every lap you go!
3. You shall give your best and prevail in honor!

That was fun  Hopefully everyone enjoyed it (with apologies to Tom C and Sir Eric for not re-grouping). It showed the power of a group coming together to meet a common goal. As CoS Blackwater stated, making time on the upper climb (which wasn’t steep ) and the descent then the flat section back to the timing line was key. Little increases by each person made a big increase for the group as a whole.

With apologies to both Sir Ruben and Sir Alex, the strategy of starting slow(er) and ramping up was not in the plan for today (I targeted 10 min as a first lap). Lap 2 (first full lap) was 9:50 and it dropped to 9:18…until the final lap at 8:57 (who would have thought that was possible?) That 30 second dig between lap 2 and lap 9 was fought for physically but even more so mentally! As a whole, the group never cracked even if individually we felt it at times.

Honestly, I felt that this ride fit the spirt of the Knight Rides better than last year’s unbanded crit.

Thank you CoS Blackwater for setting this one up and for everyone who rode today!

@Chris_Wright Agree! That was fun. I did start slow (er) (top of zone 2 power) and increased w/kg every laps except 3 and 4, when I was roughly same watts. I just didn’t expect to hit zone 4 so quickly. Of course, I will report to a flogging station later today, for that power lapse. The rest of us must have been steadily increasing, despite a few slower laps. My power and hr went from just below threshold gradually to above threshold in the last five laps. I also discovered that my max hr is still the same as it was 20 years ago. Since I haven’t hit that number lately, I must have been taking it easy in my recent workouts.

I’m mostly over my cold, but not quite fully. I definitely started in Z1 and was firmly in z2 by lap 4. But that was all my sick body had energy to attempt before it was clear I needed to stop and continue my recovery.

Next week i will make up for what i lacked this week.

@emacdoug Best wishes. I teach high school, and it has been a tough cold and flu season. So far so good for me, but lots of missed days, including my two teens.

@Chris_Wright I got within 32 seconds of the group and almost made it back on. I could see the group just up ahead on the map. At that 32 second mark, I believe I was at the base of the 5th KOM climb and that’s when the time started going back out. At that point I had a decision to make….make a hard effort (ITT) and try to get back on (which wasn’t a guarantee) or, knowing there were still 5 KOMS to go and not a lot of “catching” space in between, conserve my energy and ride my own ride. I chose the latter. I did set a PR on the 8th KOM and I know for a fact that I rode the 10th KOM harder and faster but I never got a PR notification which I was expecting. Odd. Anyhow, I completed the ride!

I was hoping that you would make it back to the group on the KOM climb as you had shown a lot of power in the earlier ones. I was impressed with the 3:36 you posted (compared to the 3:50s we had) on the climb solo. But a 30 second gap over 5 laps with a group increasing speed is not a guarantee. I think you made the right choice to finish the ride vs blowing up trying to catch the group.

Zwift changed their drafting algorithm a month or so ago to make it more effective on ascents and descents. I don’t know if it works on banded rides with riders outside the banded group (it doesn’t work within the group). I was contemplating dropping back 15 seconds to let you catch me, then us catch the group on the climb when Grunter von Blackwater said ‘sorry, we can’t slow for you (and Tom, who had a leaking tire)’.

That should be the only ride that we don’t regroup with someone off the back. The caveat is that Team Scream may not let us slow down since those running in ERG mode won’t be able to reduce power.

The Knight Rides! The Best Thing In The World (On Tour of Fire and Ice)

Every Sufferlandrian knows exactly what the Best Thing In The World is. Suffering together off course. And that is why the Knight Rides are THE place to be for all Sufferlandrians.

The Knight Rides are right in the heart of the season and in a really good place (with lots of suffering). Even if there might or might not miss a few Ridereports.

Last week was an awesome but rough team effort. Don’t miss out this week as we are going to do recovery ride sufferlandrian style all the way up the mountain.

This ride is banded, so nothing can dull the suffering!

Everyone’s welcome, there is enough suffering around for all Knights, Citizens and friends. Even if you are recovered already from last week and need to go hard again!
Revel in the glorious Suffering, guaranteed 100% GvA approved and Couchlandrian free.

That’s Alpe du Zwift at the end of this route, isn’t it? I hope some of my strong climbing buddies make it to the start line! I’ll keep a positive attitude on the Alpe, remembering the Spanish victories on this mythical uphill.

The Knight Rides! Team Scream (on Big Flat 8)

After last weeks recovery ride (sufferlandrian style), all the way up Alpe de Zwift on full gas, we should be pretty much recovered and cleansed of any couchlandrian tendencies.

It is time to go out again and have some Type 2 Fun. The annual TTT aka Team Scream beckons! You do not need to dual record (meaning using Zwift and Systm at the same time). If you can play both, you are set, if not, you are set as well, as we will do call outs for the pulls and keep you posted.

Of course there will be still everything else you know and love from the Knight Rides as well. A very hard ride, the latest paincave news (multilingual), friendly banter, dad jokes, sinister plans and epic company. If we are lucky we might make it even to The Sip™. The best thing? We ALL will do a TT Sir Alan-style @montgoma.

The route is pan flat and loops, so we can go as fast as we like.

This ride is a team effort and banded (like every time).

Our ride will be a bit longer than Team Scream so we can organize the starting times and synchronize our planing. So our ride time will be a few minutes longer.

Plan is therefore:

  • Start: Quick Organizing and giving late joiners a chance
  • about 10 minutes after starting time we will start the workout for real

Help us to get us to light speed on a flat road! Join the fun HERE!

Everyone’s welcome, Knights and Citizens. Even if you didn’t get rid of all couchlandrian tendencies and need to “recover” more.
Guaranteed 100% GvA approved and Couchlandrian free.
This Knight Ride is brought to you by the Sufferlandrian Ministry of Transportation.

P.S.: If we go fast enough, maybe we generate even the time needed for the Ride Reports… :innocent: :dashing_away:

What a ride and what a feeling pushing it to the line with a last huge effort!

It was a hard ride in front of us until this final moments though, as we headed out for the ride 80 minutes before that. A pan flat and fast route awaited us. Today we had assembled a smaller, but highly motivated group. We were ready to tackle this special stage of the Knight Rides with might. (Except those who were missing their breakfast doughnut like Sir Rich @rrutis, who was giving his best anyway, like always.)

(A smaller group, but are we stacked with power! Sir Rich will be there shortly, too)

After a warming up of 8 minutes those of us running SYSTM beside would start Team Scream. For those who would be using only Zwift I was doing the calls for the power changes and trying to give some more impressions from the video to take of the mind a bit from the hard ride.

So for me it was quite taxing, not only riding without ERG, trying to get the efforts somewhat right, but also typing almost non stop power changes and stuff while watching the workout and Zwift at the same time. I might have miscalculated a few efforts as I quickly tried to convert all of them from my numbers in my head to relative FTP. Ah well, it is the thought that counts anyway, right? :innocent:

(Happy Knight-chatter, just before the end of the warming up!)

After the warm up that we used like usually to chat and for jokes the efforts then kicked in. Sadly we lost one of our power houses to a firefighter alert he had to attend to. But as it is with Team Timetrials: If you loose a rider, you just have to go harder. And so we did.

That it was the smoke from @Chris_Wright’s legs that triggered the alert was probably just a rumor, but we shall inquire and keep you updated about that.

(Deep into the effort, right after ouch-time, just before more ouch!)

With a master piece of a workout for a blueprint, there was not much that could go wrong. Our group of interns struggled for every second with the panorama of Stavanger in the background. Each push we did at the front was hard and glorious. It was content fast pace suffering, with not much time for anything else than to focus on the hard ride. We will have to get an extra dose of chatting next week to catch up on our quota though.

But of course there still was time for The Sip™, which was duly announced by Sir Ruben @Medina81 at 1:10 hours.

(A very hard finish, so much red and yellow! #feelsgood #emptythetank)

We pushed hard all the way of the workout and then enjoyed the warm glow (spell: hot burn in the legs) of achievement. With splendid aerial views over Stavanger ended the workout and soon enough with bursts of confetti the Knight Ride ended as well.

(Not Stavanger in the background but a great Team rolling in after a hard day out!)

With this very hard special ride we take a break from special events, even if I might have hinted so otherwise 2 weeks ago. We will be having a normal, that means more chatty ride next week, which might or might not turn out harder than expected for those who like to do so.

Thank you for all that came out to the 2nd annual Knight Rides Team Scream. It was hard, it was fun and we were toast. Mission accomplished!

If you think you might have missed out on a hard ride in a stellar group. You did. But fret no more, you have still a few opportunities to join in on the fun in this season left.
So see you all next Saturday when it is yet again time for The Knight Rides!

This was definitely one of the hardest sessions of the 2025-2026 Knight Ride season. The fact that Citizen Blackwater was able to calculate and type while doing it was above impressive.

At one point Sir Ruben announced he was going to take 2 min pulls on the ‘5s’ to keep our pace up. I was grateful as I dropped 5% on the second lap to keep a sore left knee from getting worse. Although Sir Alex tried to give credit to me as a powerhouse, it was SYSTM in ERG mode that did the work. The group as a whole did great considering the challenge this ride presents.

Although I suggested Ven Top for next week (hey, I have a bike trip in Ecuador to prepare for), I am hoping that CoS Blackwater does something a little less challenging and more social. Maybe some sprints and short climbs over a 90 minute ride?

Bummed I missed yesterday’s ride. Didn’t get to sleep until late and then my son was talking in his sleep all night long woke us up multiple times so I was in no shape to wake up early to ride. I’ve also been using the first part of the year as my seasonal rest and recovery period, so I hav barely been exercising as of late, anyway, so I’m sure I would been more of a caboose than an engine. Almost time to start ramping up the z2 rides to get ready for the year, now, tho. Next week I plan to join the ride again.

Nice ride today, great group as usual. Here’s a “small world” note. While doing household chores this afternoon I happened to select the Otis Redding episode (#163] from the podcast “A History of Rock Music.” Otis recorded for Stax records and collaborated with Steve Cropper (especially) and Donald “Duck” Dunn, both part of Stax and also of the Blues Brothers band. The Blues Brothers movie and music, and Stax records, made up a large part of our in-ride conversation today. How cool is that?! Highly recommend the podcast for music fans.

Fun Knights Ride today with a lot of chat about the Blues Brothers movie. On these banded rides some people are in recovery mode, others are practicing their sprints and some are doing intervals with Zone 4 and 5 surges. If you are in the last group then you finish the ride feeling like Sister Mary Stigmata just did a number on you with her ruler. Kinda like what Jake and Elwood received on their visit to St. Helen’s Orphanage (watch the clip). Like them, those of us on the Knights Ride are on a mission from God.

Awesome ride and the Blues Brothers Soundtrack is on heavy rotation on the turntable since returning from NYC. Zwift definately needs a Chicago-Extension. New profile picture roughly inspired by the atmosphere.

Another great ride!

Sir Ruben asked us to post our favorite quotes from The blues Brothers. I am bad at number ones but good at top threes:

”Our Lady of Blessed Acceleration, don’t fail me now.”

“illinois Nazis? I hate Illinois Nazis”

“No, I didn’t. Honest… I ran out of gas. I… I had a flat tire. I didn’t have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn’t come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake. A terrible flood. Locusts. It wasn’t my fault. I swear to god!”

And and honorable mention to a gesture not a line when Ellwood takes his hat off when the blues mobile falls to pieces on front of Daly Plaza. He loved that car like we love our bikes!
