I’ve recently started getting a metallic grinding noise from my Kickr Rollr. The noise is louder the more downward pressure there is on the rollers. If I just backpedal with my bike on the Rollr but I’m not on the bike, there’s little to no noise. It’s louder when I mount the bike and start riding in my normal position. If I sit up on the bike, the sound gets louder. Video of the issue attached. Anyone have an idea for what might be wrong?
Your tire pressure is extremely low. Might be the rim and the sidewall rubbing the roller.
ROLLR needs the tire pressure as high as possible.
It looks that way from the video but it’s actually normal at 63 PSI which is the recommended pressure from Silca. This is the same pressure I ride on the roads with as well. Also, I’ve always had the tire pressure at about this same level and never had the noise before, up until a few weeks ago when it started.
And probably 20psi too low for ROLLR.
That’s a recommendation for riding on the road where surface conditions vary and potholes exist, not for balancing on two metal drums. You want to be about 5 psi below where everything explodes. I’m not trying to be difficult but to make a point.
Also, see how the deformation is worse on the front drum? You may have the beam set too long, might want to shorten it up a bit. Of course this might change after you up the pressure a bit. You want approximately equal deformation on both rollers (and absolutely minimal deformation because you have your tire pressure at the maximum reasonable.)
No worries, didn’t think you were being difficult. I’ll give your recommendation a shot and see if that fixes it. Would be a nice easy fix!
FWIW, here’s my numbers -
26mm Pirelli P-Zero tubeless: 80psi outside, 95 on ROLLR
32mm Pirelli Cinturaro Velo tubeless: 52psi outside, 70psi on ROLLR
Hope it helps! ![]()
Definitely start with the simple stuff like pressure before worrying about the bearings. I found that even a 10psi drop can start making weird noises on these units because of how the tire deforms.
Wanted to circle back here and say that @richie_engineer’s suggestion seems to have worked. I played around with different tire pressures, and the noise would start up at low pressures and go away at higher pressures. So this seems to have been the problem. Thanks to richie_engineer!
Awesome glad it got solved!
