I have a friend (and another fellow veteran) in his early fifties who was in a position similar to yours. He set a one-year goal to complete an Ironman.
One year later, he realized he still wasn’t ready for an Ironman; he competed in an Olympic-length triathlon, instead.
He was disappointed. You know what else he was? Fit, happy, and looking fantastic!
My point is this: big, gnarly goals (Big Mountains, in the current parlance) are great. Keep in mind, however, that big, gnarly goals are only a means to an end. If you’re getting a couple of months out from race day and your body isn’t there yet, don’t injure yourself by overtraining. Adapt, thrive, and give yourself a thumbs-up for changing your life.
