Be CAREFUL on the outside stuff. You don’t want to upset the repair job and go back to step one.

Okay thought I’d share a couple more thoughts on my recovery now that I’m mostly healed. Overall I feel like I managed the injury psychologically and physically about as well as I could. Held off any intensity for several weeks and did a lot of easy spins (Inspiration rides, etc.) to keep the legs moving. Here’s how the fitness loss/regain looked:

The chart shows my fitness in April (after a solid winter of SUF/XC skiing) and then the expected decline from April 25th to when I got back on the bike in early June. FTP obviously dropped off as well.

I have been pleased with how I was able to regain fitness relatively quickly, and the last couple of weeks have been able to train harder/longer. I’m finding recovery is still taking longer than pre-crash (hard for me to ride back-to-back days).

Still doing PT to regain range of motion/strength in my shoulder. Ribs seem to be completely healed at this point. I have to keep the metal plates in the collarbone for at least 9 months. Then I’ll assess whether or not to have them removed (I’ll keep them and avoid another surgery if possible).

Thanks for your support and encouragement!

This is good news. In the meantime, I’ve broken another rib just when i was gaining strength and stamina. I’m not back to square one, but I’ll be joining you, and others, clawing back, again.

Just saw this @jmckenzieKOS. So sorry to hear!

“Celebrated” my recovery last weekend with an epic 55 mile mudfest at Heck of the North in Two Harbors, MN last weekend. Managed 15th out of 70 in my age group and 73rd out of 309 overall. Glorious Suffering!
