You don’t say?!
I thought this would be the perfect song for either Hammer 8 or 9. And was in fact one of the first songs I picked out for my 9H remix. But while the lyrics are nearly perfect (tho maybe a bit too aggressive?), the music is too… how do you say… polarizing? And doesn’t quite seem to fit in properly with the rest of the tracks I’ve picked. Plus there’s too many empty musical spaces and cuts (IMO) and just doesn’t seem to hold it’s flow, so-to-speak. So, rather than just be disappointed, I’ll share it with you so you can use it properly in your own playlists - if you choose to or not.
SUFFER SUFFER SUFFER!
Just finished up my Alt Soundtrack. Now to ride to it on Sunday during my Memorial KOS Quest. As long as it turned out as well as I think it did (and everything lines up), I’ll share it here afterward.
Welp, thanks to my dodgy back I didn’t get to ride my new 9H soundtrack today. But I at least was able to preview it on Saturday.
Thanks to the minions’ poor timing skills, the interval start times are not exact. So the music is sometimes off by about a second (think 3 minute intervals that last 3:01 or 3:02 instead of 3:00). But by that logic that means the music matches * close enough * to the video.
So, for any who are brave enough to enter the Valley of the Nine Hammers, here is my alternate soundtrack:
The key to lining it up with the video is to wait and start the music right as the clock is about to tick over to 00:23 seconds, after the Wahoo intro, after a couple seconds of black screen, just before the video begins (at the 23 second mark). Don’t forget to turn off the music in the workout first. Feel free to leave the sound effects on. But definitely turn the music toggle off in SYSTM for the workout, first.
Even tho I did this only for myself, feel free to leave me your feedback, good or bad.

Notice the song title theme…
Personally, I think the end of the recovery and the first two hammers are my favorite part of my new soundtrack. That and the music for the recovery sections. And the song titles that fit nicely into the whole theme.
But there’s a lot of other great tracks in there too. Hopefully I can try this out at 100% in the near future when my back loosens up.
Coincidentally, my plan has Nine Hammers on it for this coming Monday. Now I’m actually thinking maybe I should ride it twice, once with the default music track and once with your new track so I can fairly compare. Of course, the problem with that thinking is I’ll be so dead the second time through that I won’t be able to notice the music! Won’t be a fair comparison at all!
Oh well! Thanks for sharing, Sir Evan!
Just do them on back-to-back days.
Well whenever you do, let me know what you think.
Am I counting one hammer too many?
One is repeated with a different artist, so it’s technically the right number. Lol.
The penultimate track from AVDP would be ace for the 9th Hammer!
When The Hammer Comes Down - Ballbreaker (I’ve only found it on YT so far!)
Rode this today with your substitute track. Great job, Sir Evan @emacdoug! Thank you for sharing your hard work with us. Tbh, I didn’t remember the 9H music track as being anything remarkable (bad nor good), even though according to my stats this was the ninth time I’ve ridden this in my three years in Sufferlandria. I do very much remember suffering terribly with this in my first ToS in 2021. I suppose the memory of physical agony overwhelms memory of music in this case!
I was impressed with your excellent timing as the ride switches from recovery to interval and back. Especially at the change from recovery into hammer five (I think it was) the vocalists singing “warning” were cut off before the warning could complete and the starter pistol fired for that hammer. Well done!
During today’s warmup I was considering doing it again right away with the default music just to compare, but halfway through hammer one I put that thought right off my mind! I’ll try that tomorrow.
Ah, I’m glad you noticed that! There were a few similar happy accidents that I found I could make by fiddling with exactly where the song transition happened.
As a short follow-up, I did ride Nine Hammers again today with the default music, and I have to say you were right that it is lacking a bit. Seems like too many of the hammers have music that is just not the right kind for that sort of challenge. Plenty of good music, but just not the right choices all the time. I do like “In Michigan,” which is used in one of the recovery intervals, and maybe one or two of the hammer choices, but, if I remember (not a sure thing at my age), I’ll be using your alternative track if/when I return to Nine Hammers. Thank you again!
Could you link to it again please Sir Evan? tia
Sure!

Just done nine hammers today and I can see what you mean. Not their finest sound track. Doesn’t quite fit, not sure why, timing, feel or what. I have a very broad taste in music but this was note quite right.
Whist I’d like to try to be objective and say with that level of suffering, any sound track could be annoying when you are right on the limit, it just didn’t support the suffering.
@emacdoug , thanks for the alternative track, I’ll give it a try the next time I’m stupid enough to do Nine Hammers again or when it comes up in the plan. Cheers
Just for info, this is the first time in 5 attempts I’ve finished it fully at 100% without breaks, lowering intensity or not completing. I presume therefore I need another fitness test and new 4DP numbers. Having said that I had a pre workout energy gel with caffeine and fuelled properly for it today and was clearly on a mission. Missed a mid plan Half Monty over the vacation due to being sick and thought I hadn’t made progress due to being sick, but maybe I have.
Will try your alternative sound track out.
What software do you use to splice the clips together at the right time.
Have you been tempted to try and create a Half Monty sound track? I am now! Needs a very uplifting & motivating start and then to get down to business on the ramp followed by nothing too crazy on the sustained effort. Maybe need another synch point/whole new MP3 for the sustained effort??
