Nine Hammers Shenanigans - 2026

I will bring doughnuts – glazed, sugary things to dangle before you like they used to dangle a mechanical rabbit on a dog track.

Bwahahaha, hilarious! You say “front loaded” and all I see is Nine Hammers everywhere.

Welp, I’ve already had to call my first audible. My son was feeling nauseous last night and fell asleep in the living room next to my pain cave, so I couldn’t get up early to ride. He was feeling better before bedtime and is fine this morning, but we let him stay where he was comfy. This morning is super hectic with a lot of early appts back-to-back, so it was probably better I didn’t ride, anyway. So, I’ve adjusted my calendar and called it good. Glad I left a lot of flexibility in the last 2 weeks.

I still can’t imagine this. I noticed Nine Hammers coming up on my calendar a week from tomorrow. It’ll be my 21st time. In nearly six years. The mind boggles.

Since you brought it up I decided to go look at my numbers.

I joined The Sufferfest in April, 2020. So in the 6 years before my April 1 workout (yesterday), I had completed Nine Hammers only 11 times. Of those 11, 1 was at the end of this year’s Tour, 1 was part of the 2024 Tour, and 4 of them were during different KOS quests. In fact, my first go around was completed as part of my first KOS.

So I’ve only completed Nine Hammers as a stand-alone workout just 5 times.

I joined in July of 2020 and rode Nine Hammers for the first time in August. It is usually, (or maybe always) in the 12-week All-Purpose plan. I have used that plan many many times over the years, so that’s why I have ridden it multiple times a year (plus at least one time in the tour and maybe once or more as part of a tour prep plan). I also remember fondly doing it two days in a row in July of ‘23 to compare the music playlist with your alternate playlist, Sir Evan. And I continue to use your playlist when I remember!

And just to be precise, last year I had some sort of internet or computer failure after 5 or 6 hammers and then brought it back up to do the last few hammers. So two of my 21 activities are really only one time through, meaning next week will be my 20th.

Probably depends on your rider profile. The All-Purpose plan was my first plan back in 2020 and 9H wasn’t on my schedule. I was either a Time Trialist or Roleur back then. Tho I haven’t ridden that plan since as I switched to the Century plans and then the 200 mile Gravel Grinder plan which is what I usually default to when approaching the second half of my season for KOS prep.

I just did a test and previewed the high volume All-Purpose plan for kicks and it showed up in either week 3 or 4.

That’s Awesome! :tada: :folded_hands:

I rode this first version yesterday using the original SUF music. I’m planning to switch off between the standard soundtrack and my custom soundtrack throughout the month to give myself some degree of variability between the sessions other than just modifying the intensity as needed.

I saw I had something similar in two of my sessions. I once rode about 3 minutes before starting over in a new recording. That would’ve given me twelve, but I combined them to make 11.

TBH, the only reason I go with the Sufferfest sound instead of yours is when I simply forget, going through my usual process of starting up that day’s workout. Then after a while, Coke Machine comes on and I remember.

Heh, yeah. It’s different from other workouts since it requires one extra step to remember to mute the music and start the other playlist on time.

That can be a lot to remember when I’m tired and riding very early in the morning.

Completed 18 more hammers and The Chores today. Riding along with a group of great Sufferlandrians made the suffering a lot more fun! 3 hours of riding has never gone by so fast.

I’ve been detraining for so long now that a walk this afternoon changed my status to maintaining.

One more session completed, this morning. And since I can’t neglect my strength work, I did 9H at 90% after 15 minutes of Grunter von Abi and 30 minutes of functional strength. Haven’t done 9H post-strength before, so this was a new experience. I also added 15 minutes of post-ride recovery spinning.

If anyone is interested in checking out my alternate Nine Hammers playlist, you can check out the link in this post:

You can of course listen to it without also riding Nine Hammera at the same time. But it’s so much more fun while simultaneously suffering. Makes the music “feel” different.
