Reversing a 15 month decline …

Well next time you’re in Scotland you’re hired to find a way with a hacksaw to make that happen here :rofl::+1:

Just seen this post but I thought I’d add my 2pence\cents.

I’ve been training on and off at varying levels of commitment since 2014 and FTP testing since then. Up until 2017 all my FTP ever did was go up, with a peak of 4 W/Kg in Feb 2017. I was 43.

In March that year I was in the middle of a 12 week training programme and for ther first time ever I could not hit my numbers during a 20m x 2 Sweet spot session. I coudln’t understand what was happening but I was sure I could train my way out of it.

12 months later and my FTP was around 3.4W/Kg despite various calls to a coach, rests periods and different training types. I live in the UK and went to see my GP and tried to explain my symptoms.

The benefit of so many recorded sessions and lab based FTP tests is it is quite easy to spot a decline. Sadly the doctor pretty much laughed me out of the surgery and said I was fitter than most people who walk through the door. That year i was doing the Etape du Tour in France. The doctor said if I can do that there is nothing wrong with me. I knew I could do it but i was ridculously slow.

In Dec 2018 I got a customised plan from Coach Jeff. By now my FTP was 3.19 W/kg. By the March of 2019 Coach Jeff could see i was putting in the effort but my end of traning test was down again. He said I should stop and go see a doctor. I had to go privately because the NHS couldn’t see that I had a problem.

They did multiple blood tests including Thyroid. They also tested for Leukaemia. Finally they told me to go see a cardiologist. I started the cardiology testing and appointments in late 2019. They almost had a diagnosis in Spring 2020 but half way through some final testing they realised it was something else. By now my FTP was 2.3W/Kg and I was having problems walking upstairs.

Finally in summer 2020 I was diagnosed with Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension.

I hope your issue is much simpler and apologies for perhaps sharing too much but the point of the story is. Go get tested by a Doctor that specialises in athletes.

I should add that with medication I am, for now, feeling much better and my FTP hovers around 3W/kg. VO2 will always be a problem as my condition is basically that my heart struggles to pump blood to my lungs.
