So, I’ve been putting these out in the main thread requesting feedback but figured it might be appreciated by some if it was in its own thread. So. Here it is.
In addition to the following list of vids we’re told have no licensing issues and will not require remastering:
14 Vise Grips
Blender and Blender Mini
Extra Shot
Fight Club
Half Is Easy
Hell Hath No Fury
High Time
Long Scream
Nine Hammers
No Place Like Home
Revolver
Revolver is Easy
SUF Idol
Team Scream
The Bat
The Best Thing In The World
The Chores
The Cure
The Omnium
The Rookie
The Shovel
We also have what imho, what I consider 100% Repeatable SUF Re-remasters™
Recharger
Attacker
Who Dares
Do As You’re Told
A Very Dark Place
The Downward Spiral
Angels
Power Station
ISLTA (see review from Jon )
So Who Dares must have been re-remastered because the original remaster was completely devoid of SUF. So if you’re saying it’s now a repeatable remaster then it must have had a second pass based on our feedback. That’s really good to hear!
I agree Recharger is a good one, 100% repeatable and I’d be glad to do it any time. While I didn’t write a “review” of it, I’ve done the re-re-re-remaster™ of Recharger as well and it’s definitely a winner. I mean, I’ll always miss the OG with Sagan passing his “green energy” to others in the peloton and I would never do the Sir Standsalot version, though it’s pretty good for what it is, more than once.
Ahem, yes, so I realised early on when Tour des Alps 2024 footage followed the intro. The thought crossed my mind that I might have to abandon, but I was able to ‘stick with it’ and analyse the experience as I went. Bottom line: ultimately something I’d have accepted as SUF (enough) if it had been the original and only ISLTA I’d known.
If we accept the premise that some, mainly footage, changes needed to be made I’d say it looks to me like a “good” remaster, it’s all relative; YMMV, anyone whose affinity is strongly with the original will remain so. I can ride this one multiple times, no problem.
It swapped out what presumably it needed to - footage/images that may have lost rights/provenance of or didn’t meet ‘modern policy’; replacing that with appropriate footage, while (hurrah)
retaining the original:
Workout (4 minutes shorter; the original scene-set was quite long; couple of very short intervals added)
Soundtrack (I value highly)
many/most of the original captions I.e. Must Haves : encouragement; humour; SUF culture. See image attached. Some captions were reproduced over the new footage. Did lose one of my favourites though (“Drop a Piano on them!”)
Storyline: Effort seemed to go into blending the mashup storyline more seamlessly, with changes being in the SUF tradition
it’s not as raw SUF culture /creative as the original - how was it ever going to be - but a very respectable result in the circumstances I think.
I perceive it as responding positively to previous feedback and shows “sympathetic” remastering can be done.
Anyhow - I’d suggest anyone give it a good go - as long as the legs are fresh! - and see what you make of it. ”
Firstly, thanks Glen - this thread is a great idea. It is helping me adjust my current plan to maximise true SUF content. Just a thought, is it worth also detailing what race footage is included in remaster reviews? The reason I say this is that when I first came back at the start of indoor season I seemed to mainly have Tour du Suisse footage (mainly involving Adam Yates in yellow) which got a bit repetitive. Thoughts?
Honestly, for me, no. I mean, feel free to add that yourself if you like, or anyone else is welcome to do that but, and don’t flame me here, it is much less important to me who is riding or what race they’re in than it is to have whatever we’re being asked to do effortwise, match the content as closely as possible.
I mean, sure, I love to see myself up against the superstars of the sport but that isn’t what brings me back to ride these over and over and again. Who Dares was a good example of this. Beating Coryn Labecki (Rivera) in Flanders was always so great because of the raw emotion of her joy when I beat her. It wasn’t so much that it was Coryn. For me, it could have been the winner of a local crit if their reaction to my beating them was as genuine and powerful.
Attacker ist the worst one by far. This is just awful BS to me. There is nothing left that makes we wanting to go for this anymore. Really a shame in the remastered catalog.
It’s a shame they had to remaster any of them at all and it’s a shame that Sir Francois left The Company. Good thing you’ve got some other choices though hey There’s still all the unsullied.
But for Attacker, yeh, it’s not my favourite of the re-remasters™ to be sure but I’d have no issue doing it again.
Yeh, The Model’s 4th set and Clobber need some SUF love. Primers too could have a redo/restore of all the old Knights prepping for battle stuff.
My intention, fwiw, of this thread was to share reviews of the ones that have had a second/third pass and have now incorporated much of the feedback provided in Rupert’s original thread seeking input from the nation.
Alrighty folks. Up for me today on the Re-remasters™ review was Joyride.
First, let me acknowledge that this is a complete and total redo (except for the music and the workout itself) so anyone expecting a frantic over-the-top performance from Sir Dylan or cobbles and bouncy castles will be sadly disappointed. I, like many others, LOVED that video.
This is, obvs, NOT that. But…quite honestly, considering the above, it’s actually pretty good. It is not devoid of all joy and I would 100% ride this again and consider it completely repeatable. Not art. Not brilliant. But enough SUF style text and a great workout with great music and efforts that match the footage (mostly). There’s room for improvements.
Nice reference to Cav during the final effort of the warm up!
a little Climb integration would be helpful for even better engagement. The course is mostly very flat but theres a wee section of most of the efforts where the riders go up a slight incline prior to levelling out. It would be nice to feel that.
There really ought to be some reference to the title Joyride, and there are several opportunities to do that. Maybe at the start, in reference to ITT’s in general or something like we’re gonna go for a little joyride. In fact, we’re gonna go for 5 little joyrides. And what could be more joyous than an ITT. Just you, all alone, going all out and all in. Ripping your own legs off in pursuit of The Joy of Suffering for the honour and the glory of the greatest mythical nation in the whole wide world. The purity of it.
Or, more simply, at the end, when the last rider finishes he could say, that was quite a joyride.
There are plenty of shots of the riders passing fans on the route where they could be yelling something at the riders, or just be distracted like in one spot there’s someone not even looking. I can imagine a thought bubble like: “Now where IS that donut shop everyone is talking about?”
Here are some screen shots where things could be tweaked a little.
review:
I just did this yesterday and meant to update with my review but I guess I need a procrastinate exam
In any case, I would not hesitate to add this to the list of 100% repeatable Re-remasters™.
Positives:
Climb/gradient info very well integrated
SUF style text/prompts/teases/encouragement
The Couchlandrian Donut guy is back!
The music in this is one of my faves and it just helps you grind out the power. Soooo glad it’s still here.
The onscreen efforts mostly match what is required of us including the Stand prompts.
Could use improvement:
there are plenty of missed opportunities for SUF style speech/thought bubbles both when showing the peloton and when showing the lead rider(s).
the ending, after 11 “walls” is a bit anticlimactic where teammates approach the finish line and even shake hands just before the finish line. It’s not bad, it’s just that it’s not quite the thrill you’d expect in a SUF video, especially at the very end of the final effort.
It would also be nice, especially during the recovery sections, but even during some of the efforts, to have some off-bike SUF related stuff (like the donut guy) instead of the overhead shots of the peleton.
