Sexism and racism in old videos

But that’s what you think all women want, but it’s not.

Example: 2 years ago I did the GF Schleck in Luxemburg, started off way to hard and got dropped about halfway with a hungerflat. I could eat/drink what I wanted, I was done for. So I did the remaining 75km with dead legs. At some point I was dying and someone got onto my wheel, after 10km I was about to become angry because he (as I thought) didn’t want to take turns. I looked back, ready to shout, and saw a lady there, as dead as me. So I let her sit in to the finish. After the line I congratulated her on her ride (ladies are supposed to do the short course, who sad is that, and she did the full 150km) and she thanked me for letting her sit in (if it where a guy I would have just accelerated over the crest of a climb to drop him  )

So how is anybody to know what you want? By saying something :+1:

Other way around is fun too by the way. Was wheel sucker on the Col de Haussire (hardest climb in Belgium, apparently) with a lady who passed me (she went a little faster, just doable speed for me), she pulled me to the top. Thanked her afterwards (everybody happy)

There are both men and women who take advantage and are selfish. This is not a sexism thing, it is a selfish #$%@ thing.

I agree with @TLa never assume. Ask.

THIS!!! The beauty of cycling. Do it solo, in a group (mixed?) it can be as inclusive as we like. In a groups, ‘jabs’ fly but if there’s malicious intent, that individual is not tolerated and soon is no more. Sufferfest is the embodiment of inclusivity as all are invited to suffer to their own satisfaction. Carry on!

Some really good responses here - thanks for taking the time to consider the question and share views.

I have learned that the national ribbing is more about teams than nations per se (my naivete coming through - I’m a mountain biker and have never followed road biking). It also made me think that a built in glossary would be good for road biking newbies - i.e. what do you mean by “tempo” / “interval” / etc. I could imagine this being introduced as an optional overlay that could be turned on to make the video’s more approachable for people unfamiliar to the road biking world.

With the element that could potentially be interpreted as sexist - this isn’t about people being offended, and I can see how it may have been written perfectly innocently. I was interested in people’s views about whether it could also be interpreted in a way that reinforces unhelpful stereotypes - this is more important for a “service provider” than for one-to-one conversations where misunderstandings can be explained. Some good discussion above on this too.

I did the “Butter” workout this morning and I’d have been laughing out loud if I wasn’t breathing so hard. I love the humour and silliness in Sufferfest - I don’t see any other apps with such good “entertainment” while riding, and I can imagine continuing to be a customer as long as new content of this type (backed by good science) continues to be made. Nearly all the videos I’ve seen so far have a fantastic sense of humour without needing to stray into areas that reinforce bad stereotyping. Long may it continue!

Some time ago I was on a ride and taking a breather after pushing hard for 20mins or so. I couldn’t shake the feeling of being followed and after a while I looked round to see some guy right on my tail. He was there for a bit before zipping past me. He was in all yellow.
I couldnt help myself but to retake and then drop him, and found myself muttering “Nice try, butter-boy” under my breath. I didn’t even realise I was saying it until it came out (body&brain was a bit fried by this point). I love the humour here.

Hi @Chris_Winfield - thanks for your message and welcome to Sufferlandria. Some of your concerns are entirely legitimate and should be addressed in the near future with regards to Local Hero. All I can say for now.

With regards to inclusion and tolerance, we might draw the line at white bibs though. Those are still a big no-no unless you’re a world champ and then it’s totally ok to rock the all white look.

No way. Rainbow jersey, black shorts all the way.

Get outtahere - Technically, when you’re a World Champ you should be able to do what you want.

from my aunt back in the days when she was riding her bike (we’re talking the 70’s) and getting some typical men abuse… My favourite story:

  • man in a car passing by: “put your head down you’ll look like a racer”
  • her: “shut your mouth you’ll look less stupid”

@titanicus The Sufferfest, and by association, Wahoo, HAS an ongoing relationship with the Homestretch Foundation. I expect this to continue well into the future. Unfortunately, Sir Nathanial’s pacing motorcycle was stolen a few years back and he was sporting a rather large Sufferfest decal on it.

I’m one of those that is not afraid, as a male, to be towed along by a stronger female. It happened this weekend during 95 mile ride. I’m also willing to assist ANY rider to finish a ride as I have demonstrated on several occasions as will be doing so again tomorrow. Sexism has NO place in these videos and thus has NO place in Local Hero or any other video. I appreciate some of the changes over the years to be more inclusive of everyone.
Also, I’ve never found the Sufferfest to be racist. I find organizations such as USACrits to be extremely racist and two teams have left because of that. This makes videos sourced from them and the UCI make The Sufferfest, and by association, Wahoo appear that way. That being said, videos like Kayabike show that Wahoo supports all athletes.

Excellent point. Agree that the narrative is outdated and does a disservice to our sport which is still a predominantly first-World old white male sport, much to my regret (I am a older white male living in a first-world country but have lived and worked around the globe). The narrative of some of these older videos is not only inappropriate but can also become a liability quickly. Thanks for pointing this out!

Or as a Sufferlandrian alternative to an Iron Maiden:

Iron Maiden
(noun)

(in historical contexts) an instrument of torture consisting of a coffin-shaped box lined with iron spikes.

You forgot to mention the fact that the goats have red eyes and lazers as well :+1:t2:

Yes the poor cows are definitely discriminated against. All they get is a cow bell, and even then, it’s only some of them

sorry but I can’t see anything sexist here and as far as I remember I’ve been a woman for 50+ years now…
imo, the ones who are being discriminated against are the poor guys who are neither good looking, nor are they able or even allowed to take things easy. Sufferlandrian maidens easy and free for me transmit some positive vibes. just saying…
and yeah, I love these old workouts

Gold! (pun intended)

I guess it comes down to one’s personal interpretation. I can’t say I was offended (though it’s not because I’m good looking :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:)

you weren’t offended because you’re good looking might as well mean you were offended because you’re not good looking :joy::rofl:
looks like one of GvA’s vicious plots, no matter what the poor minions do, they’re bound to get it wrong
