Sexism and racism in old videos

Violater has some of the most sexist lyrics in the videos.
Does the fact that it is not in English make it any better?

La Donna È Mobile is probably the most sexist aria in the operatic repertoire except perhaps for the List aria in Mozart’s Don Giovanni ( Madamina, il catalogo è questo’).

While O Mio Babbino Caro is a female aria, its theme is I am a woman and woe is me.

Very thin line here not to take lightly.

As the community grows the chances of someone finding something offensive (even when they are not the object of the joke) will grow. As I see it here the ‘Local Hero’ case is subjective: some of the QOS have pointed out not finding any sexist meaning. Regarding the Belgians, well, you need to take in consideration their reputation in cycling; fast, tough and hard to beat. and as in every competitive sport, a bit of trash talk is involved.

I’m not saying we should give green light for every joke here, but I already saw a comment picking up on some stuff of ‘recharger’ that might be interpreted as sexist. If we start updating videos every time someone interprets a joke as offensive, the updates will never end.

In any case, this means that if developers ever cross the line, the community is watching. But let’s not loose sense of humor and competitive trash talk and jokes - it would harm the videos a lot.

P.S: Sufferfest have had a big women community since I registered (2 years ago) and this is the first time I read a comment about sexist videos (never seen one in the FB group neither). It strikes me that it wasn’t even a women who commented on the subject.

@David.McQuillen.KoS keep up the good work

what bothered me most was the old flag. on the one hand I loved it because it was such a great Sufferlandrian symbol for me and I have one on display in my pain chamber. on the other hand I’d never dare to take it with me and fly it outside in the real world. I even try not to show it outside of Sufferlandria when I post pictures of my pain chamber (which also happens to be my office) on SoMe. it’s a Nazi flag by the looks of it, even if I know it isn’t, and I’m glad it was replaced by something less political and less offensive (in a non-Sufferlandrian context, so please don’t get me wrong on this one). to me it feels a lot better trying to not get caught by the Laser Goat🐐

Recently I took a cafe stop in the Scottish Highlands. As I walked in there was a heated discussion going on about the English. Good weather is coming up from England, they can keep it, nothing good ever comes from England. I said " I come from England" The atmosphere changed in a flash and I was treated well. The highlanders are among the most hospitable people I have ever met, they were just indulging in their national pastime of England baiting.Had I reacted with anger or argued about the unjustness of it all, it would have just strengthened their idea that nothing good comes out of England

I have had the “have you earned that bike” thrown at me too. I loved it. No greater compliment , but the more I thought about it the more I realised the attacker was weak, pathetic and so eaten up with jealousy he could never find peace and contentment until it was dealt with. Do we have a duty of care with the emotionally vulnerable? The arguments will rage for centuries .

I’d wager the French get it the worst of all…

Same. Just checked and I’m also a woman and I’m not offended by this sentence at all.

I think culturally it means different things in different parts of the world. I’m not easily offended, and find it mildly offensive because of the meaning of a free and easy maiden where I come from.

Reminds me of when I was still a university student. At a USC (University of Southern California) football game they do the “Southern California Spell-out” where - you’ve probably already guessed it - they spell out the words “Southern California” as one of the school’s traditional cheers. This is lead by the “yell leaders” who are male (as opposed to the “cheerleaders” which are female. One of those other weird anachronisms. Anyway…).

So in the middle of this particular football game (I forget which game, but that’s not important), the student section rushed through the cheer as they commonly do. So… one of the male yell leaders said “That was way too fast. Let’s do it over again” because “we like our cars and our women fast, but we like our cheers slower.”

He caught a lot of flak for that (as he rightly should) in the student newspaper the next week. This was back in the late 1990’s.

I got this from my sister last night, 50 and British, I 56, male and German (born in the U.K.) thought it fitted in the conversation quite well and it amused me no end:

It snowed last night…

8:00 am: I made a snowman.

8:10 - A feminist passed by and asked me why I didn’t make a snow woman.

8:15 - So, I made a snow woman.

8:17 - My feminist neighbor complained about the snow woman’s voluptuous chest saying it objectified snow women everywhere.

8:20 - The gay couple living nearby threw a hissy fit and moaned it could have been two snow men instead.

8:22 - The transgender man…women…person asked why I didn’t just make one snow person with detachable parts.

8:25 - The vegans at the end of the lane complained about the carrot nose, as veggies are food and not to decorate snow figures with.

8:28 - I was being called a racist because the snow couple is white.

8:31 - The middle eastern gent across the road demanded the snow woman be covered up .

8:40 - The Police arrived saying someone had been offended.

8:42 - The feminist neighbor complained again that the broomstick of the snow woman needed to be removed because it depicted women in a domestic role.

8:43 - The council equality officer arrived and threatened me with eviction.

8:45 - TV news crew from BBC showed up. I was asked if I know the difference between snowmen and snow-women? I replied “Snowballs” and am now called a sexist.

9:00 - I was on the News as a suspected terrorist, racist, homophobe sensibility offender, bent on stirring up trouble during difficult weather.

9:10 - I was asked if I have any accomplices. My children were taken by social services.

9:29 - Far left protesters offended by everything marched down the street demanding for me to be arrested.

By noon it all melted

Moral:

There is no moral to this story. It is what we have become, all because of snowflakes.

So the thing about calling people snowflakes or sharing stories about how there are, in general, too many snowflakes, does little other than minimize someones perfectly valid experience.

So imho, if you’re not offended by something it’s fine to say so. If you are offended by something it’s also fine to say so. But if you’re not offended by something I don’t think it’s okay to tell other people they shouldn’t be offended by something.

Also, and perhaps more importantly, in the context of the OP’s question about one very specific older Sufferfest video, which was given earnestly and honestly, it’s not germane to the discussion.

Thanks for proving my point Glen, try reading until you’ve reached the end next time.

Fwiw @Ade, I read your entire post and I maintain that it’s not okay to minimize the experience of others or dismiss their feelings because you happen to disagree with them.

So, one of the reasons I very very infrequently comment or even weigh in on posts like yours is that things so often turn nasty. I proved your point, you proved my point. If I’m a snowflake because I’m sensitive to the feelings of others then let it snow.

Not nasty, everybody can say what they think as far as I’m concerned, I enjoy a good discussion as well the next, but, I also reserve the right to say what I think and not be told I can’t say that.

My post by the way was a Joke, remember those?

It’s the context that counts, on the one side you want to be all knightly medieval worldly with flogging post and god knows what but take offence to ONE Video and then it’s the sentence: „Easy and Free like a Sufferlandrian Maiden“ (for how many seconds?) that you take offence to, would you have written the same if I‘d taken offence if „Easy and free like a Sufferlandrian Page“, had been written, probably not, but hey ho :sunglasses: if thou dost believe thou art but a snowflake then be that your noble calling, I doff in your general direction :grin::grin:

as Ricky Gervais once said: „sometimes it’s just a joke“

Enjoy life and don’t take it too seriously

Keep in mind the company you are with. Knights of Sufferlandria have earned the respect of their peers. And Sir @Glen.Coutts has done both a Knighthood and a Virtual Everesting. If I remember right he’s done both multiple times.
