Are you done? Did you make it?
Should we call for medical attention?
DONE. The quads are also done. After a few minutes on the floor (we’ll call it stretching) afterward, I stumbled to the shower then the fridge.
I stayed with the original plan, finishing with Who Dares. I saw somewhere in the forum that the typical Knighthood is done at 75% intensity, so I started there. I did rides 1-5 @ 75%, then decided to go big or go home and try to negative split the effort. I did rides 6-8 @ 78%, ride 9 @ 80%, then ride 10 @ 85%. Those last two about did me in so I’m glad the end was in sight.
Running long distance served me well here. I was able to stay efficient during breaks, felt like my nutrition/hydration was solid, and was able to focus on one ride at a time. (Tip: Addie Bracy’s book Mental Training for Ultrarunning is fantastic and the lessons are largely applicable to long/tough cycling efforts.) I feel like this was good training as I prep for a big race in July.
What running did not help with: time in the saddle. Thank you, chamois cream. Saved my hide (truly.)
Thank you all for the cheers and support today and for your posts over the past several years regarding your own Knighthood prep and recommendations. It was all incredibly helpful!
