Some science to explain Sufferlandrian pain:

Full disclosure, I did not read this. Skimming it though, I noticed this:

“…pain was previously thought to be the work of evil spirits”

More relevant:

Modern research has gathered considerable amounts of evidence that support the theory that pain is not only a physical phenomenon but rather a biopsychosocial phenomenon, encompassing culture, nociceptive stimuli, and the environment in the experience and perception of pain. For example, the Sun Dance is a ritual performed by traditional groups of Native Americans. In this ritual, cuts are made into the chest of a young man. Strips of leather are slipped through the cuts, and poles are tied to the leather. This ritual lasts for hours and undoubtedly generates large amounts of nociceptive signaling, however the pain may not be perceived as noxious or even perceived at all. The ritual is designed around overcoming and transcending the effects of pain, where pain is either welcomed or simply not perceived.[4]

I had a hard time reading thru that. It just sounds painful.

But that reminds me of when I had a tick removed when I was in college. I had done some hiking in the brush around Santa Barbara over the weekend and woken up with a tick embedded in the fleshy part of my chest in front of my left armpit. I think my mom tried to pull it out and ended up ripping it in half. So I went to the student medical center and they had to dig it out with a scalpel and tweezers. The whole time as they scraped and dig into my skin the doctor kept asking over and over if it hurt and if I wanted them to numb the area. But it was in a real fleshy part that I could barely feel and it didn’t bother me at all. I was more happy it was being removed and cleaned.

And my sister was our league champion in cross country in high school and one of the top distance runners in our league in track for the 1 and 2 mile races. She told me that she didn’t think she was actually the fastest runner, but that she just had a higher tolerance for putting up with the pain and suffering during the race. I felt like I was the opposite for my early years of running, where I would give up and slow down as soon as things felt hard and always tried to save energy for later.

I always remember people passing out or throwing up or barely being able to stand after a race. I was never like that. So yeah, the mental side definitely has always seemed to be an important factor in the relative feeling of pain which can be widely different from person to person.

I haven’t had any root canals. But I have had some cavities drilled and filled without novocaine.

Before today I’d done There Is No Try only 4 times. Only one of those times was after 2021, and that last time was in 2023 during a KOS attempt. So, it felt like I was riding it for the first time, and I barely remembered any of it.

14 Vice Grips is difficult at any intensity. But I’ve done it more and still remembered most of it despite all the stem chewing.

I’m glad for my rest day as my legs felt much improved. Nowhere near 100%, but still a lot fresher.

Today has been super busy so I haven’t managed to get any screenshots together. So, more screenshots to follow…

:white_check_mark: 24 done. :check_box_with_check: 7 to go.

Most of my top favorites are at the end. But most of them are great, so it’s not hard to stay enterpained.

So… ISLAGIATT today, followed by Attacker. And there was plenty of hurtadoing.

It was indeed an epic morning of suffering.

I wasn’t sure if my planned intensity level was going to work out with such a long session, especially with so little recovery during Attacker which I was riding second.

Soooo little recovery. But soooo much attacking! It was glorious.

So true. At least the shower part that is.

So much type 2 fun!

Now for my FINAL rest day before the grand finale….
