Stage 4 Tour of SUF - Retro Gear post:
In the good old days pro cyclists’ footwear and pedals were like this. Your pedals had what were called cages and toe straps. A single groove on the cleat attached to the sole of your shoe slid over the back plate of your pedal. Then you would tighten the toe strap snugging it down and voila you were “attached” to the pedal. To start a race you had one side done up already, and once you were off the start line you’d cinch up the other one. Shoes were made of leather and famous brands were Duegi, Detto Pietro etc., a lot of them had wood soles, all used shoelaces and they were all black. They didn’t dry out very fast if they got wet, and they were kind of hot in the summer. Then, lucky for us, some guy thought about it and said to himself, “if skiers can clip into their ski bindings, how about if we make a bicycle pedal that cyclists can clip into”. And that’s how we got to where we are today. Also pictured are my first clip-in pedals, Mavic, which I still use on my 1986 Vitus Carbone 7 bicycle.

The 12-speed I had as a kid had toe straps. Hated them. I think most of us took them off. But we also didn’t race in them. Was just riding to the liquor store to buy candy.

Other than mention it should be stacked off the ground, under cover but outside, and positioned such that the prevailing wind blows through the stack to help drying.
This Alabama boy knew these things. I wanted to know Norwegian secrets.
