IKR? I’m going with “depression” for now.
The Tour of Bland 2023.
Tour de X might work, though that’s open to a lot of interpretation
And let’s hope this is just some Fight Club-level trolling, and we get a proper ToS.
I really think Wahoo has a great PR card to play in differentiating their X offer (really guys, couldn’t find a product name that didn’t sound like it’s R-rated?) with Sufferlandria flavor, versus the rest of the purely training focussed but ultimately soulless and bland platforms.
The new Tour will be so frightening, they aren’t even gonna give it a name that can be publicly uttered without striking fear so deep into the hearts of anyone that even considers attempting to complete it. The Tour of “redacted”. We Dare You!
Edit: We Triple Dog Dare You!
I hope you’re correct
This is the first I’d heard of this. I’m really sorry to hear that. Sir Dylan was very much part of my Sufferfest experience. I loved the announcement video for the Tour of Sufferlandria the other year and I’m always grateful to Sir Dylan for guiding me from the team car as I traverse the cobbles of Joyride.
This for me too
Sir Dylan is the voice on the Mental Fitness videos as well.
My guess is by removing the Suf element, it’ll probably incorporate non-Sufferfest videos, perhaps even some RGT?
I hope you’re wrong but wouldn’t be entirely surprised. That said, they’d have to figure out a way to let SYSTM know you’ve done an RGT ride so you could get a badge
I’m trying to keep an open mind, but if it’s not the Tour of Sufferlandria, I’m leaning towards forgoing it this year in lieu of focused training. All my work colleagues know about the crazy ToS and part of the fun is them asking about it. Or watching me droop behind my desk or eat everything in sight and shaking their heads. I worked hard over the past few years to explain what the ToS is and why it’s important and crazy. I feel like a lot of that work will be moot if we just have “The Tour”.
Unfortunately, I am one of those masochistic folks who was drawn to the Sufferfest because it was hard. I realize that that’s a small proportion of the fitness market, but still. It would be nice to have one event that is really targeted to the masochists among us.
I also think there’s a happy medium of infusing the sport-science “don’t completely trash your body as a proxy for progress” and creating a worthy challenge that invokes the spirit of Sufferlandria once a year. One event a year that harkens back to the old days would be a nice nod to the older fanbase.
Ouch, man. “veteran”, “legacy”, “pre-Wahoo”?
fwiw, I think there are still many new fans to be acquired here. There is NOTHING like the SUF vids out there. Let SYSTM be their gateway.
Start with Neck Mobility A a gentle under 10 minute loosener, then BOOM! straight to Violator, or Extra Shot
I completely agree with this.
I’m not sure I understand what Wahoo are trying to achieve. Adding the other channels on Systm is great, but what is the purchase of RGT about? If it’s intended as an attempt to take on Z**** head on I would think it’s doomed to failure - surely that ship has long since sailed. Maybe MyWhoosh is in with a shot ('cos it’s free), but (serious question) why would large numbers of people choose RGT over Z**** when Z**** is already so well established?
Serious answer; I don’t think large numbers of people are gonna choose RGT over Zwift. But, large numbers of people may choose Wahoo X/SYSTM knowing they’re getting a killer app with tons of stuff in it including all the SUF stuff + RGT for when or if they wanna ride or race a sim.
A few thoughts on “The Tour” … no whining intended, just a long-winded version of my observations and feelings.
First, I am concerned about poster symmetry, as the three Sufferlandria tours I have done are forever immortalized on my wall. I consider these three events plus my Knighthood as crowning achievements in my cycling career, so having a cool poster and theme in 2023 is important to me.
Secondly, the timing is not optimal as February is still early season so a Tour could be incorporated without much disruption to overall training. It could work again this year, but I have an A race on April 2nd so this may or may not jive with my plans. I know I can dial it down, etc. but what is the point of doing it if you are not going Nuclear? I will donate to DPF in any case, but the riding part would be less interesting.
Also, for those of us in the US, spring break in March is one of the few chances to really spend time with our families and get away from work. It is such a big deal that school systems in major cities coordinate so as to stagger the weeks and not collapse the airports. This makes “The Tour” in March challenging as we are either with our families or catching up from the week we have already taken! For our European Sufferlandrians, think of our Spring break as a one-week version of July in Scandanavia or August in Spain. You don’t mess with those holidays!
Lastly, I have spent my entire professional career either tangentially or directly involved in Corporate M&A and I understand how things work all too well. Having said that, some of the recent layoffs are like losing buddies from my group ride. I cannot tell you how much I have enjoyed watching the zany antics down under for the different stages of the ToS. What will the route reveal look like under the new world order? Who is going to do stupid human tricks with hot sauce? Just having someone say this ride is hard and sweating/panting along with the interval is not the same.
Anyway, rant off for now. I do have faith (hope?) that you guys will drum up something cool for all of us. One with challenges that push us to our limits, wonder why on earth we are doing this, and then cranking even harder to finish the ride and raise money for a good cause!
@Glen.Coutts Agreed - they probably modeled the purchase based on capturing some of the market due to RGTs better physics for rides and races, the magic road feature, to provide another option for users doing NoVids or repeating the same SYSTM vide and also as a defensive measure as Zwift expands into more training plans.
