I am new to the Wahoo universe, I have bought a Wahoo Kickr Core with Cog and Click,
it looks like really fine once ready but as I started to use my bike, I have discovered that the click device does not work… Because it only works with Zwift, which I do not want to use.
So, my bike is doomed to be stuck at 39-21 or 39-24 cassette + chain.
My questions are:
1, can you use the kickr core even without the possibility to change the gear? I mean, all the different stuff that the kickr core provides?
2, what kind of exercises can I do with the gear blocked in 39-21? You cannot climb mountains with the kickr core!
3, Am I stuck in Erg mod? Perhaps that is enough?
Anyway, cog seems to work fine and perhaps better than a regular cassette? I don’t want to switch to a cassette only for the kickr core to work less smoothly compared to the Cog…
Welcome Beleroy! I am not familiar with the Cog and Click but you did mention that your bike is stuck in 39-21 or 39-24. If you are in ERG mode that shouldn’t matter as the app/trainer will increase/decrease the resistance based on the workout/ride no matter what gear you are in. I have a KickR Snap and I never change gears while in ERG mode.
Like Sir Eric said, if you are using ERG mode, then it will work perfectly in any app you use. If you are looking to climb mountains in a sim app, like Rouvy or FulGaz and want to use virtual gears then you might want to explore the QZ app. I think that rather than the click, you use the app to change gears but I’m not 100% on that. I haven’t tried it myself but I hear good things. https://www.qzfitness.com/
What @Eric said. I use a Zwift Ride indoor bike now, with the cog and click. I have no problems running it in ERG mode in any other training app. The only time the gearing comes into play is in Zwift - like you noted.
But yeah, you wouldn’t be able to do any actual gear shifting with the cog and click installed on your Core. If that’s a big deal breaker - and assuming since you’re on a Core you have a regular bike mounted - you can just swap out the cog for a cassette and run it like normal.
If I may ask, where did you get your Core from? You might even consider going back to the seller and seeing if you can get an exchange of some sort for a standard cassette, if Zwift isn’t your thing - though never say never! (cough Knight Rides cough).

@CPT_A now that I can get back on Zwift, one of these days I want to join a Knight Ride!
the thing is, the kickr is already back in the box and ready for the truck which comes tomorrow to send it back to Wahoo or wherever they are, and I get back a kickr core with cassette.
If I keep my kickr move, can I take off the cog and install a cassette?
But I don’t have the tools to take off the Cog and to properly install a cassette…
THAT is a pain in the ***
Wahoo offers me that:
replacement units may be from Certified Reconditioned stock. These units are rebuilt to factory specifications and will function as new units.
So, you you are exchanging for one with a standard cassette? Very good🙂. Out of curiosity, does the one that you are sending back not have a cassette on it?
@beleroy Ah, I see now. It’s just a cog and not a cassette. I see now why that wouldn’t work in non ERG mode in an app other than Zwift where you would want to change gears. If I am understanding it, though, one could use it with SYSTM app but you would basically have to stay in ERG mode.
Sorry for all of this you’re struggling with, @beleroy, very frustrating for you, I’m sure. I will say that swapping out the cog for a regular cassette is fairly simple, and usually only requires a wrench and a cassette tool (which are specific to brand and cassette size, but not that expensive.) - maybe a chain whip. No more than $20-30 US would give you all you need.
There are any number of youtube videos or instructions on how to swap a cog and cassette - many from Zwift specifically:
Just imagine this, but in reverse.
Wish you the best, and hope you get things sorted out soon to your liking so you can hit the (virtual) road.
Thank you for that bit of information @CPT_A . I was beginning to wonder if the Kickr Core trainer w/Zwift cog and click was only compatible/specific for/with Zwift. It’s nice to know that one can switch out the cog for a cassette or vice versa so the trainer can be used with other platforms.
QZFitness app supposedly lets you use virtual shifting everywhere. I haven’t tried it yet, but the developer is very active and has confirmed this when I’ve asked him directly. Assuming that’s true, it would seem this app is currently the best option to use. From what I remember, it also lets you define gear ratios.
But how does it “let you “? If it’s an app that requires you to use your phone to change gears rather than the Click or your Play controllers then it kind of defeats the purpose of having those things.
Your controller also connects to the app. This even lets you use Click/Play in MyWhoosh/IndieVelo/Rouvy etc. I’ve asked the dev and the controllers on Zwift Ride should also work.
So you basically connect everything to the app; your trainer, HR strap, controllers etc. The app then creates a virtual trainer that can broadcast all of that info to whatever platform you’re using. Since the app acts as a sort of bridge, you can also do virtual shifting as everything happens within the app.
I’ve read more about it on the dev’s site. Looks interesting. Might give it a shot and see if I can get virtual shifting to work in SYSTM even though it wouldnt show the gears.
