I’ve used both Wahoo SYSTM and TrainerRoad… In my opinion, TR is much better. Why? I like the adaptive training and it seems to me that the new CEO of Wahoo is attempting to compete with Pelotron. I think their focus is less on helping athletes and more on recruiting couch potatoes to signup for a recurring revenue subscription. I own a Wahoo erg, HR monitor, cadence sensor, speed sensor and their Powrlink pedals (to record outdoor data) so I was deeply embedded in their ecosystem & platform… After using the SYSTM for awhile, I’ve switched back to TR. I’m using the Wahoo app to record outdoor rides and strength training and that uploads to Strava and Strava then pushes data to my TR account for the adaptive algorithms.
@Utah_Tom What is up with this post? I race frequently (gravel and MTB) and consistently place high in my division. I certainly wouldn’t consider myself a couch potato.
Sorry it didn’t work out for you but you don’t have to insult other users. Athletes should use whatever helps them stay motivated.
I just did Violator today. Have you done that “coach potato” workout?
This feels like the same conversation as two others on today’s threads @Utah_Tom - all mentioning the CEO (I assume you mean the March appointee).
Was it a trial of SYSTM you’ve been using?
The posts all seem to relate to SYSTM and TrainerRoad - is there something you need help with re SYSTM or bave you now stopped using it now you’ve cancelled the subscription?
There’s always people willing to help if needed.
Yeah, found it strange with three posts all saying the same thing. Resembles whining to me. If TR is so much better, feel free to use it, the World does not really need to know.
I find the Sufferfest workouts very engaging, and a lot of times quite funny, but I guess subtile humour is not for you.
SUF/SYSTM helped me get me up to 380 W FTP and nearly 500 W MAP. Myself I would not consider those couch potato values either…
How is the new CEO of Wahoo attempting to compete with Peloton/Pelotron?
Thin skins? Kinda funny because the OP didn’t accuse any of you or any existing member of being a couch potato, only that the new CEO is trying to recruit couch potatoes. I don’t know anything about that one way or the other but only one post so far is related to that.
Not really, it was merely meant an example of SYSTM contributing well beyond couch potato status.
Then again, I was not recruited recently and have really no idea of the strategy of the new CEO, which means my post was basically pointless, really sorry about that.
I’ve had the opposite experience, where I used Trainer Road back in the day to ride with downloaded Sufferfest videos.
With ADHD, I get bored easily so TTBS* is a real problem for me. I need the video engagement to help me stay motivated.
*Turbo Trainer Boredom Syndrome - The reason Sir DMQ started his initial expedition past the Lactic Acid Sea, through the Barren Wasteland of Agonía, across the Amber Waves of Pain and to the foothills of Mount Sufferlandria. It was there that he encountered Grůnter von Agony descending after his morning warmup. And the rest is history.
Leaving the polemics aside they both provide structured training, meaning if you weren’t structured before, you get a ton of benefit just by using either of them.
Then for the remaining let’s say 20%ish, they each have strengths and also weaknesses that the athlete has to learn to work around to get the most out of.
Like TR: workouts are boring, but so straightforward that it’s very easy to customize and tailor your progression. Eg if you did 10 minute FTP intervals one day, it’s very easy to find a workout (or make one) w 12 minute intervals for next time. System the workouts are way more engaging, but tailoring your progression is harder to do.
Conversely, TR’s performance model is inferior for individualization, objectively. The ramp test only estimates FTP (not other parameters) and for a lot of folks, it overestimates. Then FTP is used to set targets, which is not a very good way of doing it. I’m actually convinced the only way TRs programming works without making people overtrained is because they’re not going hard enough by hitting Vo2max at 125% of FTP. But on the other hand it’s very accessible and doesn’t depend on pacing.
So, pros and cons to each.
