Such a brutal workout. I’ve done it several times. When I did it as part of a plan I left a note for posterity:
I did Violator two weeks ago because I have done it once a quarter for the past two years. It is good for NM training – think of it as the cycling equivalent of eating your vegetables.
So vegans and vegetarians have meat substitutes made of vegetables but meatatarians don’t have vegetable substitutes made of meat. I guess Violator will have to do. Thanks!
Finished All in mid November and I have to say that my initial reaction to the Challenge in September (and bear in mind that I have gotten literally ALL the badges) was faaak that…. Not doing this….
I started with one plan and in the end I was mixing them all up to have a more varied and complete training throughout the months. And it was good fun.
Now I’m redoing all the library workouts that I have never done at 100% or the ones during which I cracked or DNF… I’m left with Tour de Suisse 1, Strade Bianche and odly… ISLAGIATT.
Then it’s time for a new training plan, 4DP and the ToS!
Violator is brutal … I’ve been putting it off for weeks. This is only the 5th time I’ve attempted it in 4 years of SUF/SYSTM, and only the 3rd time I’ve actually completed it. I may have been a little sick in my mouth after the 5 second efforts in the second set
I’ve got a few more of the sprint progressions to do over the next week, but
I’ve saved The Shovel for Christmas Day, because I love it. A little Christmas
. My notes on some previous attempts include “favourite agony?” and “the designers of this workout and video are pure artists.” Can’t wait!
UAE Tour for me on Christmas day. 30 minutes-ish of brutal fun (then one of those no-vid NM workouts for a cool down). Next to Hammer Chase it’s my favorite pro ride. The Shovel will be the capstone on this year.
Aaaand done! 14 rides in the last 2 weeks (even taking a weekend off to go watch my Saints), but she’s in the can.
Hardest: Nine Hammers
Most surprising: The Shovel (damn that was hard)
Most fun: Joyride (what a great little ride)
Most suffering: Watching the Saints (ugghhh…)
FTP is up ~8% from October, so we’re moving up. Now just need to get my name pulled from the hat!
Sorry but I don’t think next week is going to be any less suffering.
CONGRATS to everyone who has completed the Go Beyond FTP challenge - there are still a few hours left until we close the doors.
We will be doing our prize draw early next week and contacting the lucky KICKR Move winner!
Thanks for all the great feedback about this challenge and the training plans, we are going to keep these plans available and add them to the training plan stepper to be completed at any time to work on your 4DP numbers.
January challenge is ready and waiting, look out for the post shortly.
Happy New Year everyone!
Made it in just under the wire! It was tough for me to fit it all in this quarter. 9 rides per month for 4 months doesn’t seem like a lot, and there was a time in my life when it wasn’t. But but with a 10-day work trip in September, requisite outdoor rides in October, races on Zwift, home renovation projects in November/December, having to be in the office a lot it just seemed like I was always fighting to catch up. (I know that’s my prioritisation – some people finished all the ride in like 6 weeks!)
So I wanted to say a really big thank you to the team for putting this together. In light of all that, I hate to think how little riding I would have done without the motivation of some shiny badges.
The challenge got me training much more frequently and consistently than I would have otherwise. I felt a little emotional thinking that when I finish my last sprint progression ride 30 minutes ago! (but that might be because I did checks rides ~115 major sprints this month).
When is the Tour route being announced? I’d rather avoid any workouts that are going to be included with in the coming weeks! Or else the memories of the pain will be too fresh!
Pleased to have completed it today with VIOLATOR! Which was a triple whammy of badges earning me the Sprint challenge badge as well as All The Sufferfest and All Speed badges! (Not that I’d been putting it off or anything!)
Not quite the ride I wanted as I had a IRL crash at the beginning of December which left me with patellar-femoral pain which has stopped me running (again) and reduced power output quite a bit.
SYSTM has been a fantastic motivator this year; Strava tells me I’ve ridden just over 14,000km this year, up from 10k in 2023.
Thank you; and see you in 2025!
My wife Kealy and I finished off our respective 4th badges with The Shovel this morning. The most fun I’ve had not having fun in a long time.
I really enjoyed this challenge. It was a really nice way to stay motivated to kick off the indoor season.
And full credit to Kealy. We both got started on the challenge late as we were trying to squeeze as much as we could out of the outdoor season, then Kealy lost a bunch or days laid out with a cold. But she reflected deeply and meditatively on Rule #5 and gutted it out - including packing up her trainer and bike and bringing them with us when we went to visit family for Christmas so she could keep knocking out rides.
Made all the better to jump on the bike this morning and finish off the challenge together.
Happy new year to all! Wishing you much suffering in 2025!
I love it!
Der Rupert,
World it be an option, to add the four programs permanently to list of training programs?
Eventuell if we will not get badges any more, I would love to do them once in a while.
As the Go Beyond FTP plans were so popular during the 2024 Fall Challenge, we have now added them to the general library as permanently available for you to focus on individual 4DP components:
The lucky winner of the KICKR move has been contacted - congratulations Jan!
Thanks again to everyone who persevered and completed this challenge and earned their 4 badges. Did you have a favorite/least favorite in terms of your 4DP preference?
Congrats Jan.

I find it really hard to sprint efficiently on the turbo
Tempo, for sure.
And you totally misspelled my name on the winner announcement…
