What has happened with Sufferfest gear?

Have you had any issues with it on electronic shifting? I used to wax three chains in rotation when I had cable shifters but when I went to DI2 it didn’t want to shift nice for me no matter how much I played with the adjustments so I gave up on it if you will.

Nope. Both my bikes with waxed chains are electronic. One is Di2 road. The gravel bike is Sram etap…but a mix of road and MTB. Zero issues. Have you bent the hanger?

Am about to switch the mechanical road and gravel bikes to waxed chains too.

My local friend who is from New Zealand is actually in New Zealand right now for about 2 months. I should’ve sent my bike with him so you can wax my chains for me. :stuck_out_tongue:

Or I guess I could’ve just sent some chains rather than the whole bike.

Why make it easy?

Negative, this was three years ago I tried the wax on that bike. I upgraded it from cable to DI2 when I tried it, after the waxing didn’t work I put a regular oiled chain back on and haven’t had to make an adjustment in four years. I don’t own the bike anymore but one of my riding buddies does and I still maintain it yearly for him. I’ll have to give it a shot on my new 12 speed and see if it works.

I may have gotten some buildup on the side plates of the chain that hadn’t had time to wear off there yet and that was part of the issue?

@Sir_Alan Did you wipe the chain after waxing ?

Yeah cleaning a chain before waxing is critical and takes quite a bit of effort.

What I had been doing when I was waxing them is after I took them out of the wax, I hung them up to let most of it drip off and then I had a pipe hanging in my garage that I would run them back and forth over to “bust up” most of the exterior excess wax since it only really matters that it’s in the pins. Before trying this on my DI2 I was exclusively running 3 waxed chains for about 3-3.5 years on my mechanical group set. That’s why I was kind of shocked when it wouldn’t shift right because it had worked for multiple years prior to that without any issues.

I asked about wiping because you mentioned maybe suspecting build up of something on the side plates, which i’d typically wipe down quickly after fresh waxing.

I can’t think of any link between waxing and electronic and mechanical shifting that would have any noticeable difference per se, the mechanical bits by the chain are essentially identical between the two - but if the speeds were different, e.g. 10->11/11->12, then perhaps the increased required tolerances may effect things if there was something sticking to the outside of the chain.

No idea though really, just thinking out loud.

Fair call, the tolerances on 12s chains are tiny.

How did we get from disappearing Sufferfest gear to waxing chains? :joy:

But seriously though, no more Sufferfest kit? Cuore is also not doing regular Wahoo kit, so perhaps the Company are sorting out a new supplier. If they’re smart, they’ll introduce new Sufferfest designs - getting us all itchy to buy new gear.

This was confirmed in another thread which I can’t find at the moment but I’m sure @Rupert or @Glen.Coutts could likely link to before I even finish typing this.

Guessing it won’t be SUF kit, though. :grimacing:

Im still optimistic about it. As long as knighthoods are still a thing and also still being promoted by Sir @Rupert I will continue to believe that SUF’s heart is still beating.
