Given the financial constraints of both parties, one buying the other is probably unfeasible.
I would guess this is why a cooperative relationship between the two is the path they have chosen.

Article today by DCRAINMAKER states Zwift laid off ~100 (from the article – “…roughly a 20-25% reduction”)
and the CEO has left the company.
